We are seeking a Senior Database Architect (PostgreSQL) to join our team in Ashburn, Virginia to support the ongoing modernization and maintenance of systems for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program.

Qualified applicants may be subject to a security investigation and must meet minimum qualifications for access to classified information. This is a highly technical position; individuals will be screened by peers in a technical review of skills and experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The candidate will be responsible for:

* Designing and implementing enterprise-grade PostgreSQL database architecture in a Java-based microservices environment.

* Collaborating with developers to design schemas that support Spring Boot APIs and Angular front ends.

* Leading the modernization of data stores from legacy systems to cloud-based PostgreSQL.

* Defining best practices for schema design, indexing, performance tuning, partitioning, and replication.

* Ensuring database security and compliance with federal regulations (FISMA, FedRAMP, NIST).

* Supporting high-availability, scalable cloud-hosted deployments (AWS RDS, Aurora PostgreSQL).

* Working closely with DevOps teams to integrate PostgreSQL into CI/CD pipelines.

* Providing technical guidance on PostgreSQL features, optimization strategies, and troubleshooting.

* Participating in Agile ceremonies and working with cross-functional teams to deliver business value.

Work Experience & Job Skills

* Minimum 8+ years of experience as a PostgreSQL Database Architect or Senior DBA.

* Strong experience supporting Java (Spring Boot) microservices and Angular applications.

* Expertise with PostgreSQL in cloud-native environments (AWS preferred).

* Proficient in database performance tuning, schema optimization, and advanced PostgreSQL features (e.g., partitioning, logical replication, FDWs).

* Hands-on experience with CI/CD, containers (Docker, Kubernetes), and automation tools (Liquibase, Flyway).

* Familiarity with data governance, security, and auditing in federal environments.

* Experience with legacy database migration strategies.

Education:

*Bachelor s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field is required.

* Applicable work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

* Must have a current CBP BI clearance or be eligible to obtain one.

* PostgreSQL certifications or other relevant database credentials are a plus.

Communication Skills:

* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
