Job Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Database Developer with 10+ years of experience in Microsoft Access and cloud-native SQL platforms. The ideal candidate will lead the migration of legacy Access databases into modern, high-performance SQL environments. This role involves close collaboration with program users to analyze data structures, design and execute schema transformations, develop ETL pipelines, conduct validation checks, prepare cut-over plans, and ensure a seamless transition to cloud-based platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain advanced MS Access databases, including normalized table structures, complex queries, forms, and reports.
- Translate Access data models into scalable SQL schemas and implement schema refactoring as needed.
- Lead the migration of legacy Access databases into cloud SQL platforms (Azure SQL Database, PostgreSQL, AWS RDS for SQL Server/MySQL).
- Develop ETL processes using SSIS, Azure Data Factory, AWS DMS, or equivalent tools.
- Create migration runbooks, data dictionaries, technical documentation, and deliver training or knowledge-transfer sessions.
- Perform database administration tasks using tools such as TOAD, SSMS, and SQL Developer.
- Configure and monitor data integration and batch processing solutions, ensuring optimized performance.
- Review execution/query plans, identify performance bottlenecks, and implement tuning strategies.
- Implement database recovery and security procedures, ensuring compliance with organizational standards.
- Collaborate with business stakeholders to meet data requirements, resolve issues, and ensure system usability.
- Ensure accessibility compliance (EIR standards and assistive technologies) for database administration and reporting interfaces.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- 10+ years of proven experience in designing, developing, and maintaining advanced MS Access databases (tables, queries, forms, reports, VBA for automation).
- 10+ years of expertise in relational database design, normalization, ER modeling, and SQL schema design.
- 10+ years of experience migrating databases into at least one major cloud SQL service (Azure SQL, PostgreSQL, AWS RDS).
- 8+ years of experience with ETL tools (SSIS, Azure Data Factory, AWS DMS, or equivalent).
- 8+ years creating migration runbooks, data dictionaries, documentation, and providing training.
- 8+ years experience with database admin tools such as TOAD, SSMS, and SQL Developer.
- 8+ years configuring data integration solutions (ADF/SSIS), monitoring ingestion processes, and reviewing execution plans.
- Strong knowledge of database security, performance tuning, and recovery procedures.
Preferred Skills
- 6+ years of experience with CI/CD, GitHub, and JIRA.
- 6+ years with reporting/visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau.
- 6+ years working in Agile environments.
- 3+ years of experience in healthcare or public health domain.
- 3+ years of experience supporting State Agency projects.
