Job at a Glance

  • Job Title: Fiber Networks Specialist 

  • Location: Remote but must live within one of the following state to do occasional site visits -  OH, PA, WV, MD or NJ

  • Work Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours per week

The Fiber Networks team is responsible for managing the design, construction, and maintenance of the fiber network that provides mission-critical support to transmission companies and local electric distribution companies in the operation of the electrical network.

Responsibilities

  • Support and manage the fiber optic network and projects

  • Follow established IT operations and network processes

  • Champion safe work practices for employees and contractors in accordance with Corporate, OSHA, and industry practices

  • Work closely with departments, contractors, and subcontractors to develop project requirements, costs, and schedules

  • Develop business cases for new projects

  • Conduct field site visits in support of projects, maintenance, or relocations (as necessary)

  • Design fiber solutions that are scalable, reliable, and cost effective

  • Ensure contractor documentation is complete and up to date

  • Coordinate fiber optic events within the Change Management process

Qualifications

General Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years of direct outside fiber experience

  • Experience in electric distribution or transmission industry, fiber engineering or design contractor, fiber installation or maintenance company, or cable service provider

  • Knowledge of building fiber underground, in the distribution power space, and in the static position on transmission lines

  • Knowledge of ADSS and OPGW fiber cable

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office

  • Experience with drawing and document storage tools (AutoCAD, Visio, FileNet, etc.)

  • Knowledge of mapping programs used for documenting fiber optic cable routes

  • Ability to utilize construction drawings and documents

  • Demonstrated project management or coordination of various size projects

  • Familiarity with optical network transport technologies

  • Experience managing right of way and permit issues

  • Knowledge of OSHA, NESC, and other standards required for fiber installation in the power space

  • Understanding of underground locating requirements and services

Level 1 Requirements

Level 2 Requirements

  • All Level 1 requirements

  • Growth in use of research techniques

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

  • Understanding of applicable products and/or services

  • Knowledge of best practices and techniques for addressing customer concerns

  • Ability to exercise independent judgment on basic projects and assignments

  • Minimum of two (2) to four (4) years of direct outside fiber experience

Level 3 Requirements

  • All Level 2 requirements

  • Strong questioning attitude to learn, produce results, and strengthen existing relationships

  • Excellent analytical abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • In-depth understanding of applicable products, services, and customer needs

  • Use of best practices and techniques for addressing customer concerns

  • Independent judgment on basic projects and assignments

  • Minimum of four (4) to seven (7) years of direct outside fiber experience
