What You'll Do

The VMware System Engineer is a senior-level technical role responsible for managing, maintaining, and evolving the virtual infrastructure with a focus on VMware platforms. This includes the design, deployment, optimization, and troubleshooting of VMware-based systems to support enterprise operations and strategic initiatives. The engineer will lead projects, develop and enforce VMware architecture standards and provide escalation support. The role involves working across IT domains including automation, server administration, virtualization, storage, security, and cloud technologies, with a primary emphasis on VMware environments.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, deploy, configure, and manage VMware ESXi hosts and vCenter environments.
  • Monitor and maintain health, performance, and capacity of VMware infrastructure.
  • Implement best practices for VMware virtual machines, clusters, and storage.
  • Perform system upgrades and patching of VMware infrastructure and tools.
  • Troubleshoot virtual infrastructure issues and manage support escalation with VMware vendors.
  • POC and implement new VMware solutions.
  • Lead infrastructure projects from conception through implementation related to VMware and virtualization platforms.
  • Support business initiatives through VMware solution architecture and integration.
  • Provide architectural design recommendations and contribute to enterprise infrastructure strategy and planning.
  • Support disaster recovery and business continuity planning through replication and backup technologies (e.g., Veeam, Zerto, etc.).
  • Participate in the development of virtual infrastructure roadmaps and project delivery.
  • Provide technical documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and support runbooks.
  • Deliver reports on health, usage trends, and performance metrics.
  • Support and collaborate with System and Storage Administrators to ensure end-to-end system performance.
  • Implement and maintain security configurations for VMware environments in alignment with NIST, HIPAA, and internal security policies.
  • Conduct regular system audits and vulnerability scans in VMware environments.
  • Mentor System Administrators in VMware technologies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with network, storage, and application teams to ensure system availability and performance.
  • Collaborate with other teams for virtualized server provisioning, disaster recovery, and performance tuning.
  • Develop knowledge base articles and training for Tier 1 staff.
  • Participate in 24/7 on-call rotation for virtual infrastructure support.
  • Provide escalation support and resolve complex VMware-related incidents.
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement permanent fixes for recurring issues.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in IT or related field (or 6 years of relevant experience in lieu of degree).
  • Experience with server hardware (Cisco UCS preferred) and Windows/Linux OS.
  • Familiarity with scripting and automation tools is a plus.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in IT infrastructure with a focus on VMware technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and support enterprise-scale VMware solutions.
  • Proficiency in vSphere, vCenter, ESXi, and related VMware products.
