What You ll Do
As a Senior Backend & Cloud Infra. Engineer at Lateral you will:
Build and maintain reliable, scalable backend systems with a focus on Python, AWS, and cloud-native infrastructure.
Design and implement APIs and batch processing jobs that serve real-world products.
Help architect and evolve cloud infrastructure (primarily on AWS) for availability, observability, and cost-efficiency.
Write clean, well-tested code that s easy to understand, easy to debug, and built to last.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including ML, and product to ship high-impact features and systems.
Automate away repetitive tasks and eliminate bottlenecks with thoughtful scripting and service design.
Support infrastructure-as-code efforts and deployment pipelines (Terraform, CDK, etc.)
Work closely with senior engineers to make thoughtful trade-offs around performance, reliability, security, and maintainability.

What We re Looking For
We re looking for backend engineers who love building clean, reliable systems and enjoy solving real problems with real code. You ll thrive in this role if you bring:
5+ years of experience in backend engineering
Strong proficiency in Python for building APIs, services, or batch processing jobs
Solid experience with AWS services (e.g. ECS, S3, RDS, SQS, Lambda etc.)
Proficiency in SQL Databases (Postgres)
Experience with containerization (Docker, ECS, Kubernetes)
Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g. Terraform, CloudFormation, CDK)
Strong grasp of software design principles, API development and batch job design and data processing in Python
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and modern deployment practices
Comfort owning systems end-to-end: from design to deployment to monitoring
A quality mindset - you value clean code, good documentation, and thoughtful testing
Clear communication, async collaboration skills, and a proactive approach to problem-solving
Bonus points for:
Experience with DICOM specific frameworks (PyDICOM, SimpleITK, OsiriX, OHIF, Orthanc)
Prior work in performance-sensitive or highly reliable systems
Contributions to internal tooling, observability, or deployment automation
Familiarity with security best practices for cloud and backend services
Experience working with sensitive data, such as Personally Identifiable Information (PII) or Protected Health Information (PHI), in a regulated industry (e.g., healthcare, finance).
