Job Duties

Virginia Retirement System (VRS) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Lead Infrastructure Engineer to join our IT team. This critical role is responsible for ensuring the stability, performance, and security of VRS' infrastructure assets. Reporting to the Data Center and Infrastructure Manager, this position will work closely with Infrastructure Engineers, IT, and Security personnel to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues, while also providing leadership and oversight on infrastructure projects and processes.

Essential tasks include but are not limited to:

Recommends, designs, and implements new technologies to support VRS' business initiatives.
Participates in developing strategic and project plans, requesting procurements, data analysis and architectural designs to support VRS' technology strategy.
Ensures security solutions, policies, and procedures are sufficient to fulfill regulatory requirements and respond to any threats.
Leads and mentors technology staff to apply a broad range of expertise in technology principles, best practices, and procedures to the completion of challenging and complex assignments crossing multiple functional areas.
Leads support efforts to provide troubleshooting, remediation, and validation of high priority incidents
Assists Data Center and Infrastructure manager with reviewing content of task and change requests to ensure compliance with established standards.
Completes requests and resolves incidents in documented SLA timings; as well as following all change management processes.
Creates and maintains standards and templates for technical documentation, standard operation procedures and process workflows.
Identifies automation opportunities within team's daily tasks and leverages scripting languages to automate repeatable tasks.
Partners with Security and Business Solutions organizations to ensure project and operational activities are delivered timely and accurately.
Provides delivery of service requests through an ITIL based Service Management process.
Participates in required after hours and weekend work as a member of an on-call rotation and as situations arise.
Completes other related tasks and projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or closely related field.

Ten (10) years of experience in infrastructure operations and project delivery, including extensive experience with Nutanix hyper-converged infrastructure, Okta, M365, Microsoft Server, Azure, Citrix, Public Key Infrastructure, data center management, system security or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Required skills and abilities include:
Knowledge of system administration processes and best practices, the ability to learn new technologies, and the ability to assist others in learning new technologies.
Proficient understanding of the interoperability of systems.
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues, problem resolution abilities, and customer service skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to prepare complex documents, including general and detailed design specifications.
Abilities to conduct research; gather data; compile results; solve problems; design and develop solutions; analyze complex processes; comprehend complicated materials and documentation.
