Job Details

Position Overview: We are supporting a critical initiative to decouple legacy IBM mainframe systems from tightly coupled downstream systems, specifically focusing on Customer Information File (CIF) and Product Administration components. This role supports strategic modernization and simplification efforts that lay the foundation for future scalability and adaptability.

Scrum-based execution model with optional Scrum Master support
Independent delivery team, not embedded in product teams

Responsibilities:
Analyze 437+ mainframe programs and ~30 DB2 tables to identify coupling points to CIF and product administration systems.
Design and implement strategies to decouple ID dependencies, with minimal impact to existing COBOL programs.
Collaborate with Java developers and integration leads on cross-platform orchestration, ensuring smooth transitions for ID and product code consumption.
Contribute to modernization planning for billing and payment systems, currently running on WebSphere.
Work with architects and analysts to propose decoupling strategies that avoid rewriting each mainframe program where possible.
Provide technical insight into feasibility of externalizing logic and data orchestration outside the mainframe.
Participate in Agile ceremonies, bi-weekly demos, and progress reporting to leadership.
(For Lead Roles) Drive planning efforts, coordinate activities across multiple engineers, and provide architectural guidance to internal and external teams.

Required Skills:

Mainframe/Legacy Stack:
IBM Mainframe (z/OS)
COBOL
DB2
CICS
JCL
SQL
Integration/Modernization:
Experience collaborating on Java/WebSphere-based systems
Understanding of API-based decoupling and service orchestration
Ability to assess ID and product code dependencies in hybrid architectures
Soft Skills:
Strong analytical capabilities to assess legacy systems and define a clear path to decoupling
Ability to work independently in a dedicated decoupling team
Excellent documentation and communication skills for cross-functional alignment
Prior Thrivent or financial domain experience is highly preferred

Nice to have skills:
Experience with large-scale system modernization
Familiarity with Kafka or similar event-driven architectures
Exposure to product admin systems and CIF data models
Past work in Agile Scrum teams with a decoupling or integration focus
