Role: Digital Accessibility Specialist

Location - Boston, MA

Work Model: Hybrid (Remote with 1 day per week onsite)

Length: 12 months

Position Overview

The Digital Accessibility Specialist will serve as a subject matter expert on digital accessibility within a Digital Services team. This role partners closely with the Digital Accessibility Program Manager to ensure that digital services, content, and platforms meet accessibility standards and compliance requirements.

The specialist will collaborate with cross-functional teams including content creators, developers, vendors, and IT stakeholders to promote, maintain, and continuously improve accessibility and usability standards across digital assets. This position requires strong attention to detail, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and the capacity to meet tight deadlines while adhering to established standards, policies, schedules, and budgets.

Key Responsibilities

<>Accessibility Leadership & Advocacy</>
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on digital accessibility across the organization.

  • Research and apply industry best practices, standards, and legislation, including Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).

  • Stay current on evolving accessibility technologies, tools, standards, policies, and procedures.

  • Promote accessibility as a core component of the customer and employee digital experience.

  • Assist in developing communication plans to educate staff on accessibility roles and responsibilities.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships across departments to support accessibility initiatives.

<>Accessibility Audits & Compliance</>
  • Lead accessibility audits of digital assets to ensure compliance with WCAG 2.1 Level A and AA standards.

  • Produce audit reports and collaborate with project teams to remediate identified issues.

  • Advise internal teams on embedding accessibility into design, development, and content workflows.

  • Maintain and enhance accessibility audit test plans, incorporating new tools and processes.

  • Track active audits and archive completed audits for reporting and compliance purposes.

  • Support maintenance of the digital asset inventory related to accessibility reviews.

<>Standards, Policies & Governance</>
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining digital accessibility standards, best practices, and policies as the accessibility program matures.

  • Identify and develop governance checkpoints to ensure accessibility compliance throughout procurement, design, development, testing, and maintenance phases.

  • Anticipate risks and accessibility challenges and recommend effective mitigation strategies.

  • Evaluate and analyze information from multiple sources to generate practical, compliant solutions.

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience applying accessibility, usability, and user experience principles to manage, edit, and quality-check digital content (text, images, and multimedia).

  • Strong knowledge of state and federal accessibility laws and standards, including Title II of the ADA, WCAG, and Plain Language requirements.

  • In-depth understanding of WCAG 2.1 Level A and AA compliance standards.

  • Proven experience conducting accessibility audits using tools such as:

    • WAVE Toolbar

    • ARC Toolkit

    • Accessibility Insights for Web

    • WebAIM Contrast Checker

  • Experience testing with assistive technologies, including NVDA, JAWS, Dragon Naturally Speaking, and ZoomText.

  • Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize information and prepare concise, actionable reports.

  • Experience facilitating meetings, collaborating within teams, and supporting group problem-solving efforts.

  • Demonstrated project leadership skills and ability to build consensus across departments.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to analyze complex information from multiple sources.

Preferred Training & Certifications

  • Completion of W3C Digital Accessibility Foundations Introduction to Web Accessibility (or equivalent training).

  • Accessibility-related certifications are a plus, including:

    • Web Accessibility Specialist (WAS)

    • Certified Professional in Web Accessibility (CPWA)

    • Accessible Document Specialist (ADS)

    • Certifications from the International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP)
