Description
The company is scaling their Azure, Data and AI service offerings to internal stakeholders and partners. The Web Services team is in serious need of scaling their team to ensure these services enhance, scale and sustain over the long term.
The Web Services group is seeking a Cloud Engineer with solid Azure experience to help implement and manage cloud infrastructure in a secure and scalable manner. The contractor will work closely with senior architects and application teams to support the deployment, configuration, documentation and optimization of Azure services, networking components, and infrastructure. This role requires a proactive engineer who can contribute to documentation, knowledge sharing, and enforcement of cloud governance policies in a large public-sector environment. The engineer will support a maturing Azure environment, assisting in both new deployments and modernization of existing applications.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in the setup and configuration of Core Azure subscriptions, resource groups, and environments.
Implement Azure Policies, RBAC permissions, and tagging standards based on team guidance.
Deploy and support core Azure networking (VWAN, Azure Firewall, VNets, NSGs, Private Endpoints, VPN/ExpressRoute).
Help configure and manage Azure Application Gateways and related components.
Contribute to infrastructure automation using Bicep, ARM, or PowerShell scripts.
Troubleshoot connectivity and application including issues between Azure and on-prem networks
Support incident resolution and assist with root cause analysis.
Monitor Azure environments and assist in alerting, logging, and diagnostics configuration.
Collaborate with development, architecture, and security teams on deployments and infrastructure changes.
Follow and reinforce cloud governance, security, and compliance policies.
Networking (40%)
Hands-on, design + troubleshooting focused. Tasks might include:
Configuring Azure Firewall, App Gateway, VWAN, and routing rules for new app deployments.
Setting up hybrid connectivity (ExpressRoute/VPN) for apps that still talk to on-prem systems.
Troubleshooting networking issues raised by developers (e.g., "my app can't connect to DB across VNet" or "APIM is not resolving endpoints").
Implementing Private DNS zones for new internal services.
Peerings and hub-spoke networking expansions as new DOT divisions move workloads into Azure.

Infrastructure as Code with Bicep (25%)
Automation and consistency across deployments. Tasks might include:
Writing Bicep templates for network resources (VNets, Firewalls, Route Tables, Private DNS).
Building deployment pipelines in Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions to push IaC templates.
Supporting developers by building IaC modules for their app needs (e.g., "spin me up an ASE with a WAF-enabled App Gateway").
Creating reusable IaC patterns so DOT can scale application onboarding quickly.

Managing Policies & Governance (25%)
Security, compliance, and guardrails for developers. Tasks might include:
Configuring and managing Azure Policies (e.g., enforce tagging, block public IPs, require private endpoints).
Setting RBAC roles and permissions so dev/web teams have proper least-privilege access.
Ensuring network and app deployments meet state security standards.
Reviewing and approving requests from dev/web teams - "Can we expose this API externally?" ? enforce via APIM policies or App Gateway WAF rules.
Managing cost control policies (prevent oversized resources or unapproved services).
Triaging & Misc. Tasks (10%)
