Web Developer

Description

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Web Developer to join our team and enhance the accessibility of our Shopify-based e-commerce platform. The primary responsibility of the role will be to optimize product images by creating and implementing clear, descriptive alt text, ensuring that our online storefront is inclusive to all users. This role combines technical knowledge of Shopify customization with a keen eye for detail and strong writing skills.

Key Responsibilities:

• Review and analyze existing product images on Shopify to determine where alt texts are incomplete or missing.
• Develop and add concise, effective alt text to images, being mindful of accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG guidelines).
• Ensure each alt text description balances brevity and clarity, typically consisting of 1-2 sentences that include:
• The product name.
• A quick visual description (e.g., color, size, distinguishing features).
• Collaborate with the broader web and content team to align alt text descriptions with brand voice and messaging.
• Test and verify the accessibility of images once alt texts are implemented, ensuring compatibility across screen readers and assistive devices.
• Utilize Shopify's back-end interface or any third-party plugins to streamline the addition of alt text.
• Stay up to date with evolving web accessibility standards and suggest enhancements for our platform's inclusivity efforts.

Requirements

Qualifications:

• Proven experience working with Shopify platforms, including customization and back-end operations.
• Familiarity with web accessibility standards (WCAG 2.0 or 2.1 guidelines preferred).
• Strong attention to detail, particularly in crafting clear and meaningful written descriptions.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
• An understanding of SEO principles, specifically how alt text impacts search visibility, is a plus.
• Experience with HTML, CSS, and image optimization techniques is preferred.
• Passion for promoting inclusivity and improving digital accessibility.

Preferred Skills and Competencies:

• Background in e-commerce or online retail environments.
• Proficiency with assistive technologies, including screen reader tools, to test user experiences.
• Basic design knowledge to visually assess and describe product features effectively.
