Schwab's AI Strategy & Transformation team, known as AI.x, is the central hub for Artificial Intelligence at Schwab. We are an integrated product, engineering, strategy and risk team, all based in San Francisco. We help set the enterprise vision for AI, invest in the most promising opportunities, and accelerate delivery across the company. We also build the research platform that powers AI at scale and explore next-generation GenAI efforts that will redefine how we serve our clients.

As an AI Policy Researcher, you'll be at the forefront of Schwab's commitment to responsible innovation, turning bold ideas into real-world impact. In this dynamic role, you'll interpret the latest trends in AI regulations and collaborate closely with compliance and risk to transform regulatory requirements into clear, actionable policies and guidance. You will also work closely with change management to create role specific risk-based training experiences. Your work will ensure that Schwab's AI initiatives remain not only compliant and ethical, but also lead the industry.

As a subject matter expert for first-line risk on AI rollouts, you'll support risk assessments and compliance reviews, helping to foster a culture of responsible innovation and continuous learning. Additionally, you'll work alongside research and engineering teams to stay ahead of industry trends and technical breakthroughs, actively scanning for emerging technologies and proactively developing governance and policies before challenges arise. By synthesizing insights from regulatory priorities, news, and technical advancements, you will enable Schwab to anticipate, shape, and lead the future of AI regulation-ensuring we remain proactive, prepared, and at the forefront of responsible AI integration.

What You'll Do
  • Shape Policy: Translate complex AI regulations into clear organizational policies and training materials.
  • Drive Education: Partner with change management to design role-specific training on responsible AI use.
  • Stay Ahead: Monitor regulatory trends and technical advancements to anticipate future AI governance needs.
  • Risk Expertise: Serve as a first-line risk SME for AI rollouts, supporting risk assessments and compliance reviews.
  • Champion Ethics: Promote continuous learning and ethical decision-making across AI initiatives.

What you have

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (Master's, JD) in Law, Public Policy, or related field OR 6+ years of relevant experience.
  • 4+ years in AI policy or technology policy.
  • Familiarity with AI governance frameworks and risk management practices.
  • Strong communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proven ability to collaborate across legal, compliance, risk, and technical teams.
  • Experience creating and delivering training materials.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Technical background or hands-on experience with AI or data science.
  • 7+ years in regulatory analysis, policy research, or compliance.
  • Experience in change management and capacity building for new regulations.
  • External engagement (publications, presentations, policy forums).
  • Financial services or other highly regulated industry experience.
