Job Title: Principal Software & Cloud Architect Registry Informatics
Location : Bay Area CA
Hybrid (with periodic travel to key offices and client sites)
About the Role
We re seeking a hands-on Principal Architect to lead the modernization of our Registry Informatics platform. You ll own the end-to-end technical strategy to transform a monolithic, EAV-based application into a scalable, secure, and cost-efficient microservices platform tailored for cancer registry workflows, data quality, and long-term cloud efficiency.
You ll collaborate cross-functionally to translate architectural assessments into a multi-year modernization roadmap and drive its execution.
Key Responsibilities
1. Application Architecture & Modernization
  • Assess current monolithic application (UI, services, data access); document modules, dependencies, hotspots
  • Define target microservices architecture aligned with:
    • Cancer registry workflows (abstracting, casefinding, QA, reporting)
    • Interoperability standards (HL7, NAACCR, state/national reporting)
  • Apply strangler pattern for incremental modernization:
    • Prioritize domains (e.g., import/export, reporting, casefinding, user management)
    • Define service boundaries, APIs, and data contracts
  • Create architecture blueprints, reference implementations, and guardrails
2. Data Architecture EAV Optimization & Normalization
  • Analyze existing EAV schema
  • Propose hybrid data model:
    • Normalized schemas for stable entities
    • Flexible EAV/JSON structures for variable data
  • Lead schema evolution and migration strategy
  • Collaborate with DBAs to improve indexing, partitioning, and query plans
  • Introduce abstraction layers or ORM patterns
3. Query Performance & Observability
  • Profile and optimize high-latency queries
  • Establish performance SLOs and baseline metrics (e.g., p95 latency)
  • Implement:
    • Query optimization, caching, materialized views
    • Observability stack (tracing, metrics, logs)
  • Partner with Support and SRE/Ops to reduce performance-related cases
4. Cloud Architecture & Cost Optimization
  • Review current cloud deployment and cost drivers
  • Design scalable cloud architecture:
    • Containerization (Kubernetes or equivalent)
    • Autoscaling for app/DB tiers
    • Tiered storage strategies
  • Implement cost governance:
    • Tagging, dashboards, anomaly alerts
    • Long-term optimization (reserved capacity, storage tiering, compute rightsizing)
  • Collaborate with finance/product/engineering on 3 5 year cost trajectory
5. Migration Factory Legacy New Registry Informatics
  • Build repeatable migration framework:
    • Data profiling, mapping, validation, reconciliation
    • Automation for parallel migrations
  • Architect processes to minimize downtime and manual errors
  • Collaborate with customer-facing teams for scalable, predictable migrations
6. DevOps, Security, and Compliance
  • Define standards for:
    • CI/CD pipelines, build/release automation
    • API design, versioning, backward compatibility
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, data residency, audit trails
  • Design for tenant isolation, data protection, and auditability
7. Technical Leadership & Collaboration
  • Act as technical lead and advisor to engineering, product, and executives
  • Mentor engineers on architecture, microservices, and data design
  • Communicate trade-offs to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Translate roadmap into actionable epics, stories, and milestones
Qualifications
Must-Have
  • 10+ years in software engineering/architecture; 5+ years as lead/principal architect
  • Proven experience modernizing monolithic applications to microservices
  • Strong data modeling and relational DB design (including EAV schemas)
  • Hands-on query performance tuning and DB optimization
  • Deep cloud architecture expertise (Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud Platform):
    • Containerization, orchestration, scaling, storage, monitoring
  • Experience in regulated domains (healthcare, life sciences, financial services)
  • Systems thinking and roadmap execution skills
  • Excellent communication across technical and executive audiences
Nice-to-Have
  • Experience in oncology, cancer registry, or healthcare informatics
  • Familiarity with NAACCR standards or public health data standards
  • Experience with multi-tenant SaaS platforms
  • Background in DevOps/SRE and observability
  • Prior work with migration factories or high-volume data migrations
Reporting & Collaboration
  • Reports to: Head of Engineering / VP of Product & Technology
  • Collaborates with:
    • Product Management (registry, reporting, interoperability)
    • Engineering Managers and Tech Leads
    • Cloud/DevOps, DBAs, SRE/Ops
    • Support and Migration Teams
    • Security, Compliance, and Finance
