Job Description

This Technical Expert role within Closures & HLM, Vehicle Hardware Engineering, Body Exterior, is an individual contributor leadership role responsible for the strategic development, maintenance and execution of the technical review and signoff process for the global organization. In this role, you will serve as the lead for the technical review structure and cadence for all in-flight products globally, responsible for pulling together the application teams and necessary core experts to ensure robust design, delivery, and signoff of vehicle systems through critical engineering gateways. In addition, you will support and mentor the global organization by facilitating structured problem-solving methods for resolution of technical issues for both in-flight development and ongoing production, driving robust issue closure in a timely manner.

  • Frequent global travel to various Ford and supplier locations to facilitate signoff reviews and issue resolution.
  • Act as technical architect for Closures & HLM product reviews and signoffs on a global scale.
  • Lead structured problem-solving methods and activities, utilizing 8D, 3x5 why and other tools to facilitate clear and concise communication of complex technical issues.
  • Act as technical resource internally & externally on component & vehicle systems. Provide technical support to global teams.
  • Analyze designs during the development process & address any potential failures & error states.
  • Assist Global Chief Engineer & Closures & HLM management in the identification, resolution & presentation of department technical strategies, objectives, signoffs, missions & values.
  • Guide & oversee training, mentoring & provide consulting to department engineers, supervisors & other interfacing functions.
  • Support Campaign Prevention activities for closures systems.
  • Guide development of system tools, methods & processes.
  • Support development & ongoing maintenance of commodity specific standards, specifications & verification methods.
  • Lead design reviews based on Failure Mode Avoidance (FMA).
  • Support & drive prevent recurrence process for closures systems & components.
  • Recommend and support the development & verification of applications for new & advanced designs.
  • Share & present work to cross-functional teams and executive leadership.


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
  • 10-15 years of experience in closures systems design & release.
  • Experience in automotive product development in all program phases, from pre-program through launch.
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in closure system integration and development.
  • Working knowledge closures system verification, quality, manufacturing, and assembly methods.
  • Working knowledge of closures interfacing subsystems to enable system optimization.
  • Demonstrated capability and willingness to teach/coach/mentor and document technical knowledge.
  • Demonstrated high level of communication skills and teamwork.
  • Experience interfacing with the design studio.
  • Experience working with crash safety.
  • Recognized as a "go-to" person in functional area of expertise.
  • Ability to lead a team in the delivery of technical objectives.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in mechanical engineering.
  • Ability to drive supply base & interface with supplier leadership.
  • 15+ years of experience in HLM/Electromechanical system design & release
  • Strong understanding of statistical analysis & failure mode avoidance.
  • Extensive experience & strong technical maturity working on safety critical systems & components.
  • Ability to build strong working relationships with all stakeholders including program teams, purchasing, manufacturing, Supplier Technical Assistance (STA) & suppliers.
