Who we are

Synchrony magnetic bearings is a powerful force in the world of rotating equipment! With excellent performance and stability under high-speed and high-temperature conditions, Synchrony magnetic bearings gives high reliability, low maintenance, and low total cost of ownership that conventional bearings simply can't match. Synchrony designs and manufactures reliable magnetic bearing and high-speed motors for a wide range of markets and applications. Johnson Controls acquired Synchrony in November 2019 to enhance the performance and efficiency of our centrifugal chiller products. Learn more today at Synchrony magnetic bearings - a powerful force in the world of rotating equipment.

What you will do

We're hiring! Johnson Controls is seeking an Electrical Engineer responsible for the design, development, validation, and support of active magnetic bearing (AMB) control system hardware for our JCI-Synchrony Engineering team! This position is onsite at our Salem, VA, facility. Candidates must be commuting distance, or able to relocate.

How you will do it
  • Design, develop, and validate new and updated Active Magnetic Bearing (AMB) control system hardware and firmware
  • Develop schematics
  • Select components
  • Design printed circuit board assemblies (PCBA)
  • Develop manufacturing test protocols and fixtures for PCBAs
  • Configure and program FPGAs
  • Support existing AMB hardware designs
  • Manage, through research and validation, critical component substitutions as they become obsolete or otherwise unavailable
  • Investigate root cause of failures in production and fielded electronics; implement countermeasures to address failures in new designs
  • Update PCBA designs to reduce costs and improve reliability and performance
  • Support PCBA contract manufacturers via technical consultation and documentation updates
  • Serve as technical interface with third parties
  • PCBA contract manufacturers - including automated test development
  • PCBA design and layout services
  • FPGA design services

What you will need
Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer, Electronics, Electrical, or Robotics Engineering
  • 3+ years embedded control system hardware development experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Development of application-optimized real-time closed-loop control systems
  • Critical component selection and high-speed interface design such as experience with microprocessor, DSP, FPGA, memory devices, serial communications (USB, Ethernet), and peripheral interfaces VHDL / Verilog
  • Data converter optimization (D/A, A/D)
  • Distributed power supply topologies
  • Device-to-device serial interfaces (SPI, I2C, RS485, etc.)
  • PWM control theory
  • High-speed signal and EMC (Electro-Magnetic Compatibility) PCBA layout considerations
  • Thermal management design
  • Familiarity with advanced electronic diagnostic and laboratory equipment
  • Programming & diagnostic tools (FPGA, JTAG emulators)

Preferred
  • High-speed clock domain management
  • Brushless motor commutation theory
  • Eddy current position sensor technology and interface
  • SoC (System on Chip) specifications (e.g., thermal limits) & architecture (e.g., memory controller design, system buses, cache control, processor interlocks, etc.)
  • Real-Time Operating Systems
  • Industrial control and data acquisition systems
  • Electro-mechanical systems and rotating machinery
  • Git, C/C++, Python, Java, STM32/ARM, Windows and Linux
  • Embedded control system software development
  • Custom SoM (System on Module) specification
  • Schematic based design utilizing Altium and Xilinx tool sets
