Overview
GovCIO is currently seeking a knowledgeable and collaborative Power BI Subject Matter Expert (SME) to lead the development, optimization, and governance of our enterprise Power BI environment. This role is critical in transforming data into meaningful insights and guiding teams on best practices for data modeling, visualization, and BI strategy. This position is fully remote, located in the United States.

Posted Pay Range

GovCIO is currently seeking a knowledgeable and collaborative Power BI Subject Matter Expert (SME) to lead the development, optimization, and governance of our enterprise Power BI environment. This role is critical in transforming data into meaningful insights and guiding teams on best practices for data modeling, visualization, and BI strategy. This position is fully remote, located in the United States.
Responsibilities
- Generates Ad-Hoc PBI Reports , provides technical guidance.
- Conducts PBI Training (Instructor-led Class Development, Delivery).
- Serve as the go-to expert for Power BI , advising on architecture, design standards, governance, and performance optimization.
- Design, build, and maintain data models, dashboards, and interactive reports , Power Query, and Power BI Desktop.
- Translate complex business requirements into scalable Power BI solutions with intuitive visualizations and actionable metrics.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to report developers, analysts, and business units to foster self-service BI maturity.
- Define and enforce Power BI governance policies , including workspace structure, dataset management, and Row-Level Security (RLS).
- Collaborate with data engineers and architects on data sourcing, transformation, and integration strategies across platforms (SQL, Azure Data Factory, Data Lake, etc.).
- Optimize report and dataset performance through proper modeling, indexing, and usage of incremental refresh and aggregations.
- Support licensing, capacity planning, and Power BI Service administration , including gateway configuration and deployment pipelines.
- Participate in the Power BI Center of Excellence (COE), knowledge sharing, and enablement efforts across the organization.
- Maintain technical documentation, metadata, and a catalog of certified datasets and reports.
Qualifications
Required Skills and Experience
- Bachelor's with 1 5 + years (or commensurate experience)
- Expert-level proficiency with Power BI Desktop, Power BI Service, DAX, Power Query (M) , and data modeling techniques.
- Deep understanding of data governance, visualization best practices , and BI lifecycle management.
- Experience integrating Power BI with Azure services, SQL Server, Excel, SharePoint , and REST APIs.
- Familiarity with Power BI licensing models , workspace roles, and usage monitoring tools.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to explain technical solutions to non-technical audiences .
- Power BI Reporting and ability to train other Power BI staff.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Experience participating in or leading a Power BI COE , support model, or enterprise-wide BI rollout is a plus.
