Senior Data Engineer

Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Data Engineer to join our DA&DI (Data Analytics & Digital Integration) team supporting database management needs across DA&DI BDS SC applications (e.g. SUMMIT, PbOMAT, Proc Plan, etc.). This position can be located at any major Boeing site.

Primary responsibilities include database architecture design, integration, and optimization. Also includes, data pipeline development, monitoring job/data processing/updates, implementing quality checks and validation processes, and designing/improving database architectures for improved performance.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Administer and maintain multiple databases within SSMS, ensuring performance, integrity, and security.
  • Implement and manage backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Develop, optimize, and maintain complex stored procedures, ensuring adherence to best practices.
  • Conduct code reviews and troubleshoot performance issues.
  • Manage and maintain linked server connections, ensuring secure and efficient data transfer.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve connectivity issues.
  • Perform data mining from enterprise data warehouses to extract insights.
  • Author new stored procedures based on data mining results to support business needs.
  • Monitor and optimize database performance, including query optimization and indexing.
  • Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks.
  • Design and implement ETL processes to integrate data from various sources.
  • Ensure data quality and consistency across different data sources.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of database structures, stored procedures, and data flows.
  • Ensure compliance with data governance and security policies.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams and provide technical guidance to junior data engineers.
  • Communicate effectively with non-technical stakeholders to explain complex technical concepts.

This position is hybrid. This means that the selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed location options. This is at the hiring team's discretion and could potentially change in the future.

This position must meet export control compliance requirements. To meet export control compliance requirements, a "U.S. Person" as defined by 22 C.F.R. 120.15 is required. "U.S. Person" includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in data engineering or a related role.
  • Proficiency in SQL and NoSQL databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Cassandra).
  • Expertise in database management and optimization techniques.
  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration tools like Openshift and Docker.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze complex data sets.
  • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI)
  • Understanding of data governance, data quality, and data security best practices
  • Knowledge of database design principles, indexing, and performance tuning.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proficient in programming languages such as Python, Java, or Scala.
  • Experience with cloud platforms, particularly AWS (e.g., S3, Redshift, RDS).
  • Knowledge of front-end technologies, particularly JavaScript and REACT.
  • Strong experience with data pipeline tools and frameworks (e.g., Apache Kafka, Apache Airflow).
  • Experience with API development and integration.
