Position description:
  • Our client is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Design Engineer to support their technical sales and project execution teams. This role is critical in transforming customer requirements into engineered solutions through accurate design, equipment sizing, and layout development.
  • Working closely with sales, project management, and production, the Design Engineer will be responsible for preparing drawings, estimating costs, and supporting the installation and startup of custom sanitary liquid processing systems.
  • The ideal candidate will bring strong CAD skills, a practical engineering mindset, and a passion for solving complex process challenges across industries such as food and beverage, chemical, pharmaceutical, and consumer products.
  • This role is onsite in Charlotte. Approximately 10-15% of the position requires travel, usually on the east coast or the southeast.
Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with sales personnel and directly with customers to design sanitary liquid processing systems tailored to project specifications, site constraints, and process goals.
  • Attend customer meetings (virtually or on-site) to gather requirements, understand challenges, and provide technically sound recommendations.
  • Generate and revise engineering drawings using CAD software, including process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), general arrangement (GA) layouts, and fabrication drawings.
  • Interpret customer-provided documents (RFQs, specifications, P&IDs, process flow diagrams) to develop accurate design packages and equipment layouts.
  • Participate in customer calls and internal project meetings to clarify technical requirements and contribute to design strategy.
  • Perform basic engineering calculations to accurately size tanks, pumps, valves, piping, and other equipment.
  • Collect technical and commercial data needed to prepare accurate project costing, bill of materials (BOM), and quotes for custom systems.
  • Present technical design proposals and cost estimates to customers alongside sales managers, promoting the value and feasibility of your solution.
  • Communicate design intent, project scope, and critical considerations to the Director of Engineering for review and alignment.
  • Upon project award, provide complete documentation to Project Coordination for job setup, equipment ordering, and installation planning.
  • Offer technical support to inside and outside sales staff by reviewing specifications, clarifying system functionality, and refining layouts.
  • Coordinate with production and purchasing to confirm materials, supplier options, and manufacturability for custom solutions.
  • Support field teams during installation and commissioning phases by conducting site visits, issuing design clarifications, and resolving installation challenges.
  • Participate in system startup and performance validation as needed, ensuring the design meets customer expectations.
  • Provide troubleshooting support during equipment breakdowns and coordinate corrective actions with service teams.
  • Maintain organized engineering documentation, update drawings after changes (as-built documentation), and issue change orders as needed.
  • Mentor and support other engineering and project management staff by sharing best practices, design standards, and technical guidance.
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Bachelor s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in equipment or system design for industrial process applications (preferably in food, beverage, or pharmaceutical manufacturing).
  • Proficient in AutoCAD (2D required; 3D CAD and SolidWorks experience is a plus).
  • Experience developing process flow diagrams (PFDs), P&IDs, general arrangement layouts, and fabrication drawings.
  • Strong knowledge of fluid handling equipment such as tanks, pumps, valves, piping, and HXs.
  • Comfortable performing basic engineering calculations including flow, pressure drop, and heat transfer.
  • Ability to interpret customer specifications, RFQs, and site layouts to develop practical and efficient designs.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to interface with sales, customers, production, and installation crews.
  • Highly organized with a strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for site visits, project installation support, or system startup.
  • Familiarity with sanitary design principles and relevant codes/standards (e.g., ASME, BPE, 3-A) is a plus.
