Job Title: Full Stack Java Developer
Location: Reston, VA
Type: 6 + months contract - very strong chance of extensions
Work Model: Remote with onsite approx. 1X every 2 months

PURPOSE:
We are seeking a strong Full Stack Java Developer to support the modernization of a legacy web application and participate in its cloud migration. This role involves complex application development across front-end and back-end systems, and requires experience with Java, HTML, CSS, and familiarity with modern JavaScript frameworks such as React or Angular (a plus). Experience with mainframe systems and AI integration is beneficial but not required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
25% - Application Development & Technical Leadership
  • Perform technical design, full-stack coding (Java, HTML, CSS), and testing.
  • Participate in cloud migration efforts and modernization of legacy web applications.
  • Adhere to code quality, security, DevOps standards, and CI/CD practices.
  • Troubleshoot, optimize, and support critical application services.
25% - Software Design & Testing
  • Analyze and interpret functional/non-functional requirements.
  • Implement secure, scalable, and maintainable code.
  • Write and execute unit and automated tests.
  • Document source code, technical workflows, and system dependencies.
25% - System Integration & Maintenance
  • Develop solutions integrating front-end and back-end components.
  • Contribute to the operations and maintenance (O&M) of existing systems.
  • Evaluate and recommend tools, patterns, or architecture updates to improve application scalability and performance.
25% - Collaboration & Innovation
  • Participate in product roadmapping, sprint planning, and architectural discussions.
  • Work cross-functionally with teams (DevOps, QA, Product Owners).
  • Mentor junior developers and foster continuous learning.
  • Stay up to date on emerging technologies (AI, cloud services, frontend frameworks, etc.).

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • In lieu of a degree, 4 additional years of relevant work experience required.
Experience:
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on software development experience in Java-based environments.
  • Experience working with legacy web applications and migrating to modern stacks/cloud.
  • Strong background in front-end technologies: HTML, CSS, JavaScript.
  • Familiarity with React or Angular is a plus.
  • Exposure to mainframe systems is a plus.
  • Experience or interest in AI integration is a plus.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Proficient in Java and web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).
  • Knowledge of RESTful APIs, backend integration, and microservices.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS or Azure preferred).
  • Familiarity with databases (SQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MongoDB).
  • Understanding of Agile methodologies, CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across teams and independently when needed.
  • Experience with testing frameworks and test-first practices (TDD/BDD).
  • Familiarity with containerization tools like Docker/Kubernetes is a plus.
