Role: Senior Mainframe Z/os Systems Engineer
Client: Tayota
Location: Plano Texas
The role can be remote but there would be some travel. Initial 2-weeks onsite, each quarter onsite for the week (4 days) and then as-needed for project activities. Otherwise, remote.
Notes:
Senior Mainframe role requiring extensive z/OS expertise with at least 15-20 years of experience. This is not an application development role.
-ideal candidate should have deep knowledge in three key areas: Z/OS, storage, and network systems, with capabilities in hardware and software activities
-must possess strong operational skills in managing mainframe platforms, standardizing best practices, and have basic cloud knowledge (particularly AWS)
-role involves system modernization strategy, with the ability to guide team direction and execute technical improvements
JD:
The Mainframe Systems Engineer is responsible for the design, optimization, and modernization of Toyota s mainframe systems. This role requires expertise in z/OS upgrades, network management (printers, TLS, mail), automation (REXX, tools), storage solutions (Hitachi & VTS), and hardware uplift. Additionally, the engineer will lead service improvement, best practice implementation, software rationalization, Broadcom elimination efforts, and mainframe modernization solutions.Key Responsibilities
Perform z/OS upgrades to maintain system stability and compliance.
Troubleshoot and resolve technical showstoppers during datacenter migration and z/OS operations.
Automate system processes using REXX and mainframe tools to improve efficiency.
Manage network infrastructure, including printers, TLS, and mail services.
Oversee storage solutions for Hitachi & Virtual Tape Storage (VTS).
Collaborate with vendors on software licensing, hardware uplift, and modernization initiatives.
Drive software rationalization, reducing redundancy and optimizing costs.
Lead Broadcom elimination project, ensuring transition to more effective solutions.
Engage in Severity 1 & 2 incident resolution, providing technical expertise for critical issues.
Implement service improvement strategies and standardization efforts for operational excellence.
Ensure SOX compliance, maintaining strict regulatory adherence and documentation.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field
15+ years experience in mainframe architecture, including z/OS upgrades and hardware uplift
5+ years experience designing scalable, secure enterprise systems
Hands-on development/programming experience in COBOL, DB2, IMS, MQ, RACF, and CICS
Expertise in automation (REXX, tools) and service optimization
Familiarity with cloud service providers (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform)
Preferred Qualifications
Strong knowledge of Hitachi & VTS storage solutions
Experience in Broadcom elimination and cost optimization projects
Expertise in legacy system modernization approaches ("7 Rs")
Cloud-based mainframe modernization strategies
