Job Description:

Sr. Food Scientist (Bakery Category)

Position Summary:

Provide strategic leadership and expertise in food technology, focusing on product technical services and quality maintenance. Ensure all tasks are performed safely, efficiently, and accurately to support and enhance the performance of the Food Technology team in the areas of Safety, Quality, and Reliability (SQR).

Essential Job Functions:

Evaluate and recommend new processes, programs, equipment, and technologies relevant to manufacturing, distribution, quality assurance, or retail.

Lead internal and external teams as a subject matter expert to develop and improve product processes while managing costs and maintaining or enhancing product quality.

Oversee activities and projects with both internal manufacturing facilities and external contracted manufacturers for food and non-food consumer products; monitor regulatory and technological changes impacting the industry.

Provide leadership to manufacturing operations to troubleshoot product and processing issues and implement effective solutions.

Collaborate with plant teams to align manufacturing processes across multiple locations, improving product quality, cost efficiency, and operational effectiveness.

Demonstrate excellence in project planning and execution, optimizing resources to accelerate project completion.

Conduct pilot plant development work and execute plant trials for new products and processes.

Reformulate products to reduce ingredient and manufacturing costs while maintaining or improving quality.

Offer technical support related to testing techniques and quality assurance procedures.

Prepare and maintain material specification documentation.

Audit batching operations and analyze consumer feedback; manage follow-up projects to enhance product quality.

Train and mentor Product Development Specialists within the Food Technology team.

Collaborate with Sensory Manager to organize and coordinate consumer panels.

Review product label proofs to ensure compliance with labeling and claim regulations.

Adhere to established programs, policies, and practices to produce safe, high-quality foods that meet regulatory and company standards.

Supervise and coach direct reports, conduct performance reviews, and provide constructive feedback.

Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of food safety and quality systems.

Minimum Position Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Food Science or a related field.

3+ years of progressive technical experience in the food industry.

Proven excellence in project planning, problem-solving, and execution.

Strong oral and written communication skills.

Prior experience in Food Product Development is required.

Ingredient Analysis: Study the chemical and physical properties of ingredients like flour, yeast, sugar, and fats to understand how they interact during baking.

Product Development: Create new baked products or improve existing ones by experimenting with formulations, textures, flavors, and shelf life.

Process Optimization: Refine baking processes to enhance efficiency, consistency, and quality in commercial production.

Quality Control: Ensure products meet safety and quality standards through rigorous testing and analysis.

Research & Development: Collaborate with food manufacturers to innovate and solve technical challenges in baking.
