Senior Automation Engineer
On-site/Hybrid (3 days/week), Columbus, OH area
Target Start Date : August 2025
Direct Hire, Full Time
Salary : $140-150K, 15% annual bonus
Overview:
Our client, a Fortune 500 global leader in the building materials industry, is in the implementation phase of a large-scale, enterprise-level plant automation initiative. This program spans production and distribution facilities worldwide, with a primary concentration in North America. The focus is on enhancing IT/OT system architecture and modernizing material handling capabilities through advanced automation technologies, including Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) and Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs).
They are seeking a Senior Automation Engineer to lead the implementation of plant automation upgrades-ranging from PLC/SCADA system enhancements to the integration of robotics for end-to-end material handling automation.

Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and execute capital improvement and automation upgrade projects across manufacturing facilities.
- Oversee the integration of AMRs/AGVs and automation platforms (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Fanuc) into production environments.
- Manage the full lifecycle of automation projects, from planning and stakeholder engagement to execution and commissioning.
- Interface with cross-functional teams, including plant engineering, IT/OT, and operations to align on project goals and timelines.
- Serve as a mentor and technical leader for junior engineers throughout project execution.
- Manage and support plant commissioning and start-up initiatives.
- Travel approximately 30-35% to domestic sites and occasionally to European facilities during project phases.
Qualifications:
- 5-10+ years of experience leading capital projects and automation upgrades in a manufacturing environment.
- Bachelor's Degree in engineering, computer science or other applicable discipline
- Hands-on expertise with PLCs, SCADA, AMR/AGV systems; experience with Allen-Bradley is required; Siemens exposure is a strong plus.
- Familiarity with Fanuc robotics platforms.
- Strong background in plant automation within both continuous and discrete manufacturing; experience in building materials is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience using Stage Gate, Agile, or hybrid project management methodologies. Exposure to TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) methodology is a big plus.
- Exceptional organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Proven ability to manage stakeholders and guide cross-functional engineering teams.
Preferred Experience:
- Exposure to discrete manufacturing processes (doors, appliances, etc.).
- Previous involvement in plant commissioning or greenfield/start-up operations.
