Cybersecurity Architect / Engineer Connected Systems
Location: McLean, VA (On-site)
Travel: Up to 10%
Clearance: Public Trust eligibility required
We are seeking a Cybersecurity Architect / Engineer to lead security architecture and secure-by-design efforts for connected, distributed, and cyber-physical systems. This role focuses on defining security strategies, developing system-level architectures, and ensuring evolving solutions remain secure as requirements, standards, and threats change.
< style="color: #1d2228; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; outline: none !important;">Role Overview</>You will act as a security subject matter expert, shaping cybersecurity architectures across research, development, and deployment initiatives. The role combines technical leadership, architecture design, and hands-on security engineering in support of complex, connected systems.
< style="color: #1d2228; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; outline: none !important;">What You ll Do</>Define and lead secure-by-design security architectures for new and existing systems
Develop security strategies, technical approaches, and supporting documentation
Integrate cybersecurity risk management activities into the full system development lifecycle (SDLC)
Assess cybersecurity risks and recommend mitigation strategies for system, network, application, and database vulnerabilities
Design and maintain vulnerability scanning and assessment solutions
Develop and manage security artifacts such as System Security Plans (SSPs), Risk Assessments, SARs, and POA&Ms
Collaborate with engineering, operations, and business teams to align security with technical and operational goals
Interface with customers, partners, and suppliers on security architecture and compliance topics
Support security architecture across both on-premises and cloud-based environments
Bachelor s degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Engineering, or a related field with 6+ years of relevant experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
Strong understanding of cybersecurity risk management and control frameworks
Experience integrating security controls into system and software development lifecycles
Experience securing IoT or connected device platforms
Hands-on experience with vulnerability assessment, remediation planning, and scanning tools
Experience developing and maintaining security documentation and compliance artifacts
Strong communication skills with the ability to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, evolving environment
Eligibility for a Public Trust clearance and authorization to work in the U.S.
Experience with connected, cyber-physical, or intelligent systems
Familiarity with interoperability, networking, or communication standards
Experience in R&D or innovation-focused environments
Security or infrastructure certifications (e.g., Security+, Network+, Linux+, vendor certifications)
Experience with secure software development practices and application security architecture
Experience leading or mentoring engineering teams
Familiarity with Agile development and collaboration tools (e.g., Jira, Confluence, GitLab)
