Description

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren or Milford three times per week, at minimum.

The Role:

Instrument panel structural and airbag deployment finite element analysis engineer performing static and dynamic assessments to meet GM and FMVSS requirements.

What You'll do:

  • Conduct analytical finite element simulations to evaluate vehicle instrument panel (IP) systems. Primary activities would be passenger and knee airbag deployment, FMVSS 201L Head Impact assessment, and IP static and dynamic performance.
  • Work with Safety VDDV teams in support of full vehicle crash simulations.
  • Leverage significant off-shore resources to support program and method development workload. Define tasks and timing such that program milestones are met and progress towards virtual validation proceeds with urgency.
  • Work with suppliers, outside test labs, and GM test engineers to maximize learnings from limited hardware. Follow up post-test comparison of CAE and test results and incorporate learnings into improved modeling and analysis techniques to support virtual validation.
  • Perform DOE variation and optimization studies using various advanced CAE tools and methods to improve the design robustness.
  • Participate in global teams charged with improving methods, adopt latest software tools, and utilize process automation/machine learning to accelerate design development towards successful tool kick off release.
  • Handle multiple projects independently, present effectively to leadership, and drive virtual design development.

Additional Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Engineer Mechanics, or Material Science (polymers) is required.
  • 5+ years of engineering experience
  • 3+ years of FEA experience in automotive industry is required using LS-DYNA, Optistruct and Hypermesh or ANSA.
  • Excellent knowledge of solid mechanics, structural dynamics, and modal analysis.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles and physics of automotive systems.
  • Knowledge of Optimization tools and DFSS principles to enable robust design solutions.
  • Experience managing CAE reviews with design and platform customers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in teams, balance theory with practical limitations, and identify and execute work at a level of detail consistent with the need for accuracy and the time available.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills)
