Job Description
The Sr. Systems Engineer (Controls) is responsible for planning, documenting, implementing, and testing controller architectures and interfaces between Rheem Water Heaters and other entities including the cloud, Rheem devices, utilities, etc. This role includes technology investigation, roadmap development, and prototyping, as well as suitability assessment and architecture development for application to Rheem products. The successful candidate will implement and extend a common controls platform strategy within Rheem. This is a key position on the Electronic Controls Team within Rheem's Advanced Technology Integration organization, providing advanced technologies and systems solutions for Rheem's Water Heating business unit.
This position will serve our Enterprise Division, located in Montgomery, AL (Hybrid).

This position will serve our Enterprise Division, located in Montgomery, AL (Hybrid).
Responsibilities
- Implement technology roadmap and develop technical solutions to new interconnection concepts.
- Work with product development groups in translating new concepts into production designs.
- Develop design concepts or models, and prototypes, and conduct performance testing to determine the feasibility of concepts.
- Develop test methods, coordinate the implementation of experiments, evaluate test results, and prepare written reports of research findings.
- Coordinate contractual arrangements for developmental programs with outside suppliers or research organizations.
- Participate in technical societies and keep the company advised of pertinent technological developments.
- Actively participate in patent creation for new products/technologies.
- Engage with software, hardware, test, and product development teams to integrate new technology into the Rheem control platform.
- Engage with Product Management to develop Product Requirements.
- Participate in product design reviews to ensure that products have required hardware and software features.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Systems, Electrical, Computer, or Mechanical discipline).
- 7+ years of experience in the development of embedded microprocessor-based controls.
- An innovative solution-first spirit and an ability to think creatively.
- High technical aptitude.
- Able to work with cross-functional teams (e.g., product managers, engineers, business teams) and external subject matter experts.
- Experience with electronic control design including communication interfaces, analog and digital circuit design.
- Familiarity with lab test equipment and board bring-up (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers).
- Knowledge of one or more of WiFi, Bluetooth, cellular communication, Ethernet, IoT Passionate about building and owning innovative, customer-facing services/products.
- Great presentation and communication skills Proficient computer skills and in-depth knowledge of relevant software such as MS Office Suite.
- Master's degree in Engineering or related field.
- HVAC / Water Heating industry experience preferred.
- Organize/supervise prototype build of circuit boards or product components.
- Apply electronic analysis methodologies and simulation.
- Knowledge or experience with HVAC or gas appliance development or application Design-of-Experiments (DOE).
- Analyze and interpret technical procedures and government/agency regulations (UL, CSA, CE, FCC, etc.).
- Cost analysis of electronic controls and designing to meet cost targets.
- Experience working with multiple departments such as R&D, marketing, manufacturing, service engineering, suppliers, and customers.
