Role: Mainframe Systems Engineer - Night Shift
W2 Contract-to-Hire: 6 Months
Location: 100% Remote
- 100% remote with candidates residing in Maryland, D.C., Virgina, and West Virginia.
- Dedicated night shift, with 4 shifts, 10 hours 6:00 pm to 6:00 am including weekends and holidays. (Flexibility permitted)
W2 Pay Rate: $71/hour on W2 - All inclusive
Overview
Join our client s critical operations team as a Senior Software Engineer, specializing in mainframe operations and monitoring for our night shift. This hands-on role involves proactive monitoring, rapid response, and expert troubleshooting of complex mainframe job events, alerts, and system issues during critical end-of-day and start-of-day batch processing. You will leverage your deep mainframe expertise to diagnose problems, engage relevant teams, and drive issues to resolution in a fast-paced, independent environment. Key responsibilities include:
Provide "eyes on glass, hands on keyboard" operational monitoring of mainframe systems and applications during the 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM timeframe.
React quickly to system alerts, circuit issues, network issues, timeouts, and other errors through various systems.
Perform initial triage and diagnostics of complex issues, even those not previously encountered, leveraging transferable knowledge.
Troubleshoot and resolve mainframe job abandons, including evaluating criticality and making necessary JCL updates to ensure processing.
Utilize Control-M to understand job dependencies and orchestrate resolutions.
Monitor queue depths and other performance indicators to proactively address potential problems.
Engage and collaborate with on-call personnel from specific organizations to drive issues to resolution.
Required Qualifications
5-8 years of experience as a Senior Software Engineer or in a similar mainframe operations/monitoring role.
Extensive hands-on experience with IBM mainframe.
Strong proficiency with Z/OS and DB2.
Expert-level comfort with JCL (Job Control Language).
Solid experience with Control-M.
Demonstrated experience in an operational monitoring role, reacting quickly to alerts and performing triage.
Ability to work independently and confidently in a night shift environment, troubleshooting complex and novel issues.
Willingness to work a fixed 10-hour, 4-day-per-week night shift schedule, including weekends and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with monitoring applications such as Datadog, BigPanda, or Splunk.
Basic network technology experience.
Prior mainframe development experience.
