Network Engineer – Service Provider Backbone (Juniper MX Focus)

Location: Preference for candidates willing to travel or relocate to Tuscaloosa, AL (Open to Discussion) 
Compensation: $160,000 – $180,000 
Employment Type: Full-Time 


Overview
Seeking an experienced Network Engineer with a strong service provider or ISP background to support and expand a large-scale carrier-grade backbone network. This role is highly technical and hands-on, focused on Juniper MX routing, BGP/MPLS, and traffic engineering across multiple data centers. The ideal candidate has experience operating high-availability internet transport infrastructure and scaling large distributed networks.


Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain a multi–data center service provider network.

  • Configure and monitor Juniper MX series routers and core switching infrastructure.

  • Manage BGP sessions, MPLS, traffic engineering, and peering relationships.

  • Support high-availability internet access and transport connectivity.

  • Troubleshoot escalated Tier 3 network incidents in coordination with operations teams.

  • Drive network expansions, upgrades, and migrations to support ongoing growth.

  • Contribute to automation, monitoring, and optimization initiatives.


Required Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience in a service provider/ISP environment (telco, cable, or carrier).

  • Hands-on expertise with Juniper MX routers—configuration, scaling, and optimization.

  • Strong knowledge of BGP/MPLS and internet routing architecture.

  • Proficiency with network monitoring tools (SolarWinds, Nagios, or similar).

  • Linux command-line experience for network diagnostics and automation.

  • Background in managing carrier hotel or data center interconnect environments.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Juniper certification (JNCIP or higher strongly preferred).

  • Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to work independently in a remote setting.

  • Familiarity with backbone-scale internet infrastructure operations.
