Job Description

Reporting to the VTES Engineering Manager, the Energy Data Engineer will oversee the day-to-day management and support of various operational technology (OT) systems within the Operational Data Warehouse (ODW), focusing on the PI System. Collaborating with Shared Services IT and/or OT Software vendors, they will assess system changes and upgrades required for expansion and evaluate potential impacts on OT systems before and after expansion. A key responsibility includes ensuring the integrity of connections to multiple IT & OT systems from which data is collected and exported, maintained on a daily basis.

The Energy Data Engineer will also:

  • Provide day-to-day support to assure the OT component of the PI System is functional, updated and maintains connectivity to the campus BAS and industrial controls systems that utilize IP, BACNet, Modbus, Hart, SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) and other protocols.
  • Work with internal and external resources to provide support and enhancements to the multiple systems supported by the energy & utilities stakeholders and be well-versed in both IT and OT systems.
  • Coordinate software and hardware updates, access control, tree structures, database management and backups with Shared Services IT and PI System or contracted PI System partners.
  • Provide support to campus users of the ODW applications, including updating screens, providing training and other support as needed.
  • Enhance the PI System energy metering platform and dashboard, utilizing the database for superior energy data analytics and reporting.
  • Identify and address malfunctioning field metering to ensure data integrity through data analytics processes.
  • Using all available resources, manage the rectification of metering issues detected promptly. Regularly validates accuracy of meter data.
  • Work autonomously and with others to develop energy data reports for a wide variety of stakeholders.
  • Use PI System and building automation systems to support the identification, development and measurement & verification of energy efficiency measures.
  • Fulfill all assigned tasks promptly and professionally, maintaining a safe and tidy work environment.
  • Ensure completion of all projects to supervisor's satisfaction through consistent follow-up.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor s degree in computer science and/or engineering, or a relatable associate degree combined with relevant work experience/training. Incumbents must have training in computer science or computer networking.
  • Progressive, demonstrated experience with OT and IT Systems.
  • Training in computer science or computer networking, including in the following areas: utility metering, electronics, steam boilers, HVAC, electrical or building automation (particularly metering and building automation).
  • Experience with PI System Historian (or similar data historians), BAS (DDC) Systems, Computer Networks, SCADA systems, Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), Crystal Reports, SQL Databases and ARCGIS.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of programming languages such C++, Python, and Visual Basic.
  • Knowledge of application program interfaces such as Restful API or SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol).
  • Extensive knowledge of building mechanical and electrical systems preferred.
  • CCNA Certification.
  • BAS and Industrial Control System training and certification.
