Job Description:

As a Data Engineer SME at GDIT, you will be responsible for designing, building, and optimizing an AI-first data ecosystem that promotes enterprise intelligence, automation, and trusted AI adoption. MEANINGFUL WORK AND PERSONAL IMPACT
As a Data Engineer SME, the work you'll do at GDIT will be impactful to the mission.
  • Design and optimize AI-first enterprise data architectures that ensure data is readily, contextually, and efficiently consumable by AI agents and intelligent systems
  • Lead and contribute hands-on implementation of production-grade data pipelines that power agentic workflows and human-AI teaming
  • Define enterprise data standards and frameworks that ensure interoperability and AI-ready data consumption across Growth, Finance, HR, Legal, and IT domains
  • Embed quality, observability, and risk controls across data platforms to ensure reliability, traceability, and compliance across both human and AI use cases
  • Mentor enterprise data teams and implement best practices for building and operating AI-first data infrastructure
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with data governance and security standards

WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO SUCCEED
Bring your expertise and drive for innovation to GDIT. The Data Engineer SME must have:
  • Education: Master's degree
  • Experience: 15+ years of experience in data engineering or data architecture with a focus on building and managing large-scale data platforms, pipelines, and infrastructure
  • Security clearance level: None
  • Role requirements: Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or Java, and familiarity with data processing frameworks like Apache Spark, Flink, or Hadoop. Extensive experience with database technologies, both SQL and NoSQL, including platforms like PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, MongoDB, or Neo4j. Experience with cloud-based data services and platforms, such as Azure (preferred), OCI (preferred), AWS, or Google Cloud, including data storage solutions like Azure Data Lake, S3, or BigQuery. Knowledge of AI methodologies and agentic AI frameworks such as MCP or LangGraph. Knowledge of data governance principles, including data quality, data security, and regulatory compliance. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, machine learning engineers, and developers to understand and fulfill data requirements. Excellent problem-solving skills, with a track record of monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimizing data workflows and infrastructure.
  • Preferred Skills and Abilities: Relevant certifications in Data Engineering or Cloud Platforms are a plus
  • Location: This role requires working at our GDIT facility in Falls Church, VA. Must be comfortable working onsite (3) days a week.

The likely salary range for this position is $162,775 - $220,225. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
