Lead Monitoring Engineer
Location - Washington, District of Columbia
Duration: 9 months contract
Job Description
About the project: This initiative focuses on migrating infrastructure from Go-Cloud to AWS, with Datadog being implemented as the primary monitoring and observability platform.
Client is currently in the process of replacing AppDynamics with Datadog and has already completed the migration of SolarWinds and Nagios monitoring capabilities into Datadog. In parallel, they are migrating all on-premise Claim services to the AWS cloud.
The client is seeking a consultant with strong administrative experience in setting up and managing monitoring platforms, specifically with Datadog and AWS, to support and optimize this enterprise-wide migration and observability strategy.
Core Areas of Expertise Required:
Technical Skills:
Datadog Administration (Must-Have):
Deep hands-on experience configuring and managing Datadog on Linux, including:
o Infrastructure monitoring (Linux, Windows, AIX)
o Application instrumentation (Java apps on Tomcat)
o APM setup and Browser RUM
o Custom dashboards, alerting, and log management
o Synthetic monitoring (e.g., using CloudBeat and Selenium)
Log Management (Nice-to-Have Alternative):
Experience with the ELK Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana) is acceptable as a substitute or complement.
Scripting and Automation:
Proficient in Python, Shell scripting, and Ansible for automating tasks and tool configurations.
Network Monitoring Knowledge:
Exposure to SNMP, routers/switches, F5, Palo Alto, and related tools is a significant plus.
SSL & Cert Management:
Experience installing/managing SSL certificates and encryption configurations on Linux.
Tools & Environments:
Linux/Red Hat Enterprise
Tomcat, WebSphere, IHS
Databases: Familiarity with DB2, SQL
Monitoring Tools: Datadog (core), CloudBeat, BigPanda
CI/CD + SDLC: Agile and SAFe methodologies
Defect Tracking/ITSM Tools: Possibly integrates with ServiceNow
