Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities

  • Design & Architecture
    • Translate High-Level Designs (HLDs) into Low-Level Designs (LLDs) for firewall and network security solutions.
    • Collaborate with Architects to ensure solutions align with Ascension's architecture principles (standardization, modernization, consolidation, modularization).
    • Develop run-books, configuration standards, and reference architectures for firewall technologies.
  • Implementation & Engineering
    • Lead the hands-on build and deployment of complex firewall solutions (e.g., Palo Alto, segmentation, VPN consolidation).
    • Execute advanced maintenance, lifecycle upgrades, and migrations with minimal downtime.
    • Drive automation of firewall provisioning, compliance checks, and monitoring.
  • Operations & Troubleshooting
    • Serve as Tier 3/4 escalation point for the most complex firewall/security incidents.
    • Lead root cause analysis for high-severity incidents and drive permanent remediation.
    • Ensure solutions improve reliability, uptime, and security hardening across the environment.
  • Leadership & Mentorship
    • Mentor and review the work of Firewall Engineers and TechM staff; act as a technical lead on projects.
    • Train-the-trainer: build internal capability so Engineers and future Ascension FTEs can operate and support solutions.
    • Foster a culture of documentation, process discipline, and knowledge sharing.
  • Governance & Compliance
    • Ensure all firewall changes and deployments follow Ascension's change management, compliance, and security standards.
    • Validate and enforce security policies (macro-segmentation, micro-segmentation, access control).
    • Support audits, risk reviews, and regulatory requirements (HIPAA, HITECH, etc.).

Key Accountabilities

  • Deliver projects on time, within scope, and aligned to FY26 security hardening and uptime goals.
  • Reduce technical debt through lifecycle management and firewall consolidation.
  • Act as the subject matter expert (SME) for firewall technologies and security segmentation.
  • Partner with vendors, managed services providers (HCL, TechM), and internal stakeholders to drive results.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 7+ years hands-on experience with enterprise firewalls (preferably Palo Alto; exposure to Fortinet, Cisco ASA a plus).
  • Proven success designing and implementing segmentation (macro/micro).
  • Advanced troubleshooting experience across multi-vendor, multi-site healthcare or enterprise networks.
  • Strong understanding of automation, compliance frameworks, and ITIL-based operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and lead technical teams.
  • CISSP, PCNSE, or equivalent certification preferred
Requirements

Education:

  • High School diploma equivalency with 2 years of cumulative experience OR Associate's degree/Bachelor's degree with 1 year of experience OR 5 years of applicable cumulative job specific experience required. 2 years of leadership or management experience preferred.
