Job Description: Technical Specialist/Analytics Specialist Location: Sacramento, CA (Fully Remote) Duration: Long Term

Position Summary:

CalPERS is seeking a highly skilled Analytics Specialist to lead the design, development, and maintenance of data models supporting enterprise analytics initiatives, including Power BI reporting, cloud architectures, and AI/ML use cases. The ideal candidate will have expertise in data modeling, a strong grasp of cloud data frameworks, and the ability to deliver knowledge transfer sessions to internal stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Data Modeling and Design

  • Design and develop relational data models for traditional databases.
  • Create cloud-based data models using modern methodologies (e.g., medallion architecture).
  • Build advanced models to support AI and machine learning workflows.
  • Ensure models align with CalPERS business and technical objectives.

2. Tool Proficiency

  • Utilize Erwin Data Modeler to create and maintain data models.
  • Build optimized data models in Power BI to support visual analytics.

3. Publishing and Documentation

  • Publish models to internal platforms (e.g., CalPERS intranet, cloud environments).
  • Develop comprehensive documentation: entity-relationship diagrams, data dictionaries, and maintenance guides.
  • Ensure models are secure, accessible, and user-friendly.

4. Knowledge Transfer

  • Deliver training sessions to internal IT and business teams on data modeling concepts.
  • Facilitate Q&A and mentoring to ensure successful adoption of models.
  • Empower state staff to take ownership of data model maintenance and enhancement.

Deliverables:

Deliverable 1: Data Models

  • Relational and cloud-based models.
  • Power BI models optimized for performance.
  • AI/ML models including feature engineering and preparation pipelines.

Deliverable 2: Knowledge Transfer

  • Training tailored to team members skill levels.
  • Hands-on collaboration to build internal capacity.

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in data modeling (relational and cloud environments).
  • Expertise with Erwin Data Modeler and Power BI.
  • Proven experience designing models for AI/ML workflows.
  • Deep understanding of data architecture patterns (e.g., medallion architecture).
  • Experience working with cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud Platform).
  • Excellent communication and training skills.
  • Experience with documentation and model governance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working with public sector or large enterprise environments.
  • Knowledge of data warehousing tools and ETL/ELT processes.
  • Familiarity with data governance, security, and compliance standards.
