Job Description

As a member of Ford's Advanced Networking Group, the Senior Hardware Engineer will work on ensuring signal integrity for high-speed communication links. The Advanced Networking Group is responsible for identifying and developing the right in-vehicle communication networks for Ford's next generation electrical architecture by incorporating new network technologies or improving the performance of existing ones, while reducing overall system cost and maintaining electrical robustness for automotive use. This group creates network requirement specifications and design verification documents for OSI model's layer 1 (hardware) to layer 2. The specifications developed by this group are used by Product Development teams for all vehicle programs.

Specific responsibilities include:
  • Analyzing high-speed digital circuit designs based on industry standards and automotive requirements for Signal Integrity (SI).
  • Performing signal integrity simulations to identify and resolve potential problems, conducting measurements for validation and correlation.
  • Specifying SI budget requirements for individual segments (board, cable, connectors, etc.) considering jitter, noise, crosstalk, and EMI/EMC.
  • Formulating requirements based on learnings for board-level layout, interconnects, routing, termination, and supporting components for end-to-end design.
  • Formulating design verification test methods to ensure robustness/performance.
  • Reviewing circuit designs for signal integrity compliance.
  • Leading signal integrity functional failure problem-solving activities in prototypes and production vehicles.
  • Creating test plans and performing tests as per industry standards.
  • Interfacing with product development teams - Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), Electrical Distribution Systems (EDS), and Vehicle validation to integrate signal integrity throughout the product development process.
  • Providing product development teams with technical guidance, feasibility, alternatives, and oversight regarding in-vehicle network implementations.
  • Driving industry standards development to lower component costs, automate testing, and solve common automotive industry problems along with industry experts.
  • Collaborating with the software team to support hardware bring-up and testing.
  • Building working relationships with chip, cable, connector vendors to evaluate emerging technology.

Minimum requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or equivalent technical degree.
  • 5+ years of experience designing high-speed digital circuits.
  • 2+ years of experience with at least one or more SI simulation and PCB design tools such as Mentor Graphics Hyperlynx, Cadence Sigrity, HSpice, ANSYS HFSS/SIwave, or equivalent.
  • Hands-on experience with lab testing and characterization - Proficient in using lab test equipment (e.g., Oscilloscopes, Vector Network Analyzer, Time Domain Reflectometer, and circuit board rework station).
  • Solid understanding of industry standard interfaces (e.g., CAN, LIN, SerDes, PCI, and Ethernet).
  • Proficient in transmission line theory, s-parameters, bit error rate testing, crosstalk, characteristic impedance, eye diagrams, and time-domain analysis.
  • Good understanding of Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) principles in automotive applications.

Preferred requirements:
  • PhD or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis on Signal Integrity.
  • 7+ years of experience with designing high-speed digital circuits.
  • 5+ years of experience with SI simulation tools.
  • Experience in designing, modeling, and characterizing high-speed network interfaces.
  • In-depth knowledge of transmission line and electromagnetic theory.
  • Experience with networking hardware, network structures, data transmission rate, network configuration, and networking protocols.
  • Knowledgeable on microprocessors, DDR, PCIe, cameras, displays, and sensors.
  • Experience with EMC/EMI and regulatory requirements for automotive components.
  • Experience capturing and writing requirements specifications.
  • Experience with vehicle diagnostic tools to troubleshoot, analyze, and resolve vehicle network issues.
  • Experience working with Automotive Standards organizations like IEEE, SAE, ASA, OpenAlliance.
  • Self-Starter: Willing to take on an assignment with general goals and work in a team to complete it.
