Job Description:

Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine is recruiting for a Spring 2026 TDS Cell & Gene Therapy Development API Co-Op, located in Malvern, PA.

Research & Development Co-op Overview:

J&J R&D encompasses the development of sophisticated materials, process improvements, risk management and mechanical testing through the development process across all sectors including Pharmaceutical, Medical Device, Consumer and Corporate/Enterprise.

You will have the opportunity to learn about anatomy, disease states, deformities and the surgical procedure/products used to address these conditions.

Life as an R&D Co-op:

The R&D Co-op program provides each student with real-life hands-on experience, coaching and mentoring, networking opportunities, as well as the opportunity to meet people from various schools throughout the country. Each Co-op will be assigned to a single function with a specific project for the 6-month term.

Key Responsibilities:

The TDS Cell & Gene Therapy Development API organization is seeking a candidate interested in Gene Therapy process development. In this role, the Co-Op will...
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the current downstream processing steps by conducting viral clearance studies with various model viruses.
  • Develop and validate viral detection methods (ie plaque assay, infectivity assay, etc) for model viruses.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental results using analytical and statistical techniques. Actively participate in weekly meetings with internal and external collaborators.
  • Participate in technical discussions on design of experiments to fill gaps in knowledge.
  • Maintain a laboratory notebook and other technical documents according to required guidelines.
  • Provide other project support as needed.

We are also seeking a candidate interested in Gene Therapy process development. Adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors are the primary gene therapy platform for a variety of human diseases. Process development of AAV-based gene therapies is largely challenged by purification and analytics, slowing down overall turnaround and timelines. In this role, the Co-Op will be responsible for..
  • Leading a collaborative project to develop novel and highly advanced high throughput methods for rapid analysis of gene therapies.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental results using analytical and statistical techniques. Actively participate in weekly meetings with internal and external collaborators.
  • Participate in technical discussions on design of experiments to fill gaps in knowledge.
  • Maintain a laboratory notebook and other technical documents according to required guidelines.

Qualifications

Education:
  • Biology, Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and related majors are preferred.
  • Candidates must be actively enrolled in an accredited University for the duration of a co-op assignment. Preferred candidate will be pursuing a PhD degree or equivalent. Minimum GPA of 2.8 is required.

Experience and Skills:

Required:
  • Candidate must demonstrate a strong understanding of basic laboratory techniques such as cell culture, molecular biology, and analytical methods (ie PCR, ELISA). Familiarity with viral clearance methods is preferred but not required.
  • Candidate must have previous experience with liquid chromatography
  • Ability to demonstrate strong analytical and quantitative skills is required
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and leadership skills are preferred
  • Ability to balance multiple projects and initiatives while performing results
  • Must be a self-starter works independently while supplying to the team goals
  • Proven leadership/participation with campus programs and/or community service activities is desired

Preferred:
  • Students with basic laboratory skills and experience in research, experimental design & execution, and data analysis preferred.
