In this position...

The Core Exterior Structural Systems organization is seeking a GSR interested in learning and developing skills in structural systems joining, particularly sealers & adhesives and bolted connections. The Core Joining Engineer position will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment with a cross-functional team to identify and resolve issues, as well as develop and maintain Foundation documents. A key part of the role will be guiding and supporting program teams to deliver proper joining execution.

This position will work jointly with the Sealer & Adhesive TS as well as the Structural Fastening & Bolted Connection TS. On the Sealer and Adhesive side, the engineer will be involved in solving new product design challenges, plant concerns and develop new materials to support future architectures. For Bolted Connections, this role will support current and future programs to ensure BIC quality, cost and lightweight execution within ever-evolving, multi-material platforms.

What you'll do...
  • Support Architecture and Applications customers - drive for quality and cost / weight efficiency
    • Work closely with application D&R team to optimize designs as a system
    • Assess feasibility of program-specific material combinations and executions during the program development phase
    • Evaluation of adhesive & sealing joining trials with new materials and/or joining in alignment with cross functional teams, R&A, Body Construction Joining SMEs
    • Work with TS's on Technical Engineering Sign-Off of sealer & adhesive and bolted connections related requirements at key program milestones
  • Technology Development
    • Work with cross functional teams to develop new materials and joining applications which deliver future strategic Structural Systems solutions
    • Benchmark competition
    • Work with the CAE team on the development of simulation methods and joint cards
  • Institutionalize knowledge and best practices
    • Develop and maintain Foundation/Quality documents (DVP, DFMEA, SCCAF, interface diagrams, boundary diagrams)
    • Develop and maintain Core documents to institutionalize knowledge including Design Rules, training materials and other required documents for sealers & adhesives and bolted connections
    • Work with cross functional team to update and develop new Engineering Specifications, standards, tools, and test methods
  • Business Support:
    • Drive continuous improvement in the Supply Base
    • Lead/participate in solving production issues with VO, Materials, STA and Purchasing
    • Review TVM actions for feasibility


You'll have...

Minimum
  • B.S. in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or a related physical science field of study
  • 5+ years as a Structural Systems (including Joining) Design and Release Engineer or similar experience
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn Adhesives and Sealer (pumpables, tapes, baffles, extruded other) products and supply base
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn fastening systems, including joint design development, product attribute correlation, corrosion mitigation, control plan management and testing protocols
  • Program life cycle experience from pre-program through Launch including one major (scale 4-6)
  • Working knowledge and experience with Engineering toolset - TCE, Catia, CAE
  • Excellent written / verbal communication skills
  • Strong leadership behaviors
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated capability to work closely with cross-functional teams to resolve issues and document technical knowledge
  • Self-starter - Ability to work effectively with little oversight
  • Ability to manage and work multiple projects

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related physical science field of study
  • 5+ years experience with job responsibilities specific to sealers & adhesives and bolted joining systems
  • Familiarity with GPDS and GTDS processes, timing and delivery requirements
  • Experience writing DFMEA's, SCCAF's, Engineering Specifications, Requirements, Design Rules
