Job Details
Principal Engineer
Duties
- Define scope of technical programs and develop quality, cost-effective solutions to complex problems
- Apply deep technical knowledge to resolve problems using advanced practices and complex features
- Lead problem-solving across departments; recognized subject matter expert
- Evaluate program outcomes and deliver reports/recommendations
- Identify tech limitations and recommend improvements
- Stay current with advancing technologies
- Prepare and monitor plans, budgets, schedules, and work quality
- Communicate objectives/results verbally and in writing
- Occasionally author reports for external publication
- Demonstrate leadership through technical societies and publishing
Education & Experience
- Ph.D. in applicable science or engineering discipline and 5+ years of experience
- OR Master s degree with 8+ years of experience
- OR Bachelor s degree with 10+ years of experience or more
Top Skills & Years of Experience
- 10 years of recent design experience, including at least 4 years in Fire Alarm, Detection, and Signaling Design
- General knowledge of:
- Electrical/control systems
- Connection diagrams
- Layout plans
- Logic diagrams
- Panel layout details
- P&IDs
- Battery loading calculations
- Working knowledge of NFPA Codes and Standards, including:
- NFPA 13, 70, 72, 90A, 101
- IBC
- ISA and IEEE standards
- Experience with 2D MicroStation CADD
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications
Nice to Have
- Active DOE clearance (L or Q) within the past 2 years
- Previous SRS Design Engineering or DOE facility experience
- Proficiency in using MicroStation 2D CADD
- Familiarity with SRS engineering support processes and procedures
Work Schedule
- Monday to Thursday, 6:45 AM 5:15 PM
Work Location
- 100% Onsite
- Candidates must be local or willing to relocate at their own expense
Required Qualifications
- Security Access: Must be eligible for DOE Q clearance
- Active clearance not required at start
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior DOE L or Q clearance within 2 years
Additional Duties
- Support CLIENT with design engineering staff augmentation
- Responsibilities include:
- Task analysis
- Site walk-downs
- Design development and documentation:
- Location Plans
- Connection Diagrams
- Conduit/Block Diagrams
- Logic Diagrams
- Panel Detail Drawings
- P&IDs
- Battery Loading Calculations
- Provide technical support for:
- Construction
- Start-up & testing
- Suppliers/subcontractors
- Prepare:
- Data Sheets
- Statements of Work
- Procurement Specs
- Design Build Specs
- Purchase Requisitions
- Follow all CLIENT procedures; programmatic guidance provided by CLIENT
Additional Education
- ABET-accredited Fire Protection Engineering degree
- OR
- BS in engineering with at least one of the following:
- PE license in Fire Protection
- NICET Level III/IV certification (SFPE)
- Professional or Fellow SFPE member
Additional Experience
- Must meet minimum 10 years of design experience (4 in Fire Alarm/Detection)
- Knowledge of electrical/control systems, drawings, diagrams, and calculations as noted above
- Familiar with national codes and standards (NFPA, IBC, ISA, IEEE)
- Experience with 2D MicroStation CADD and Microsoft Office
- Preferred:
- Prior SRS or DOE experience
- MicroStation 2D CADD proficiency
- Familiarity with SRS engineering procedures
Additional Work Requirements
- Must perform weekly job site walk-downs:
- May involve uneven surfaces, active work zones
- May require ladder climbing, PPE, respirator use
- Travel only permitted after:
- Full procurement approval
- Justification and cost details submitted
- Travel not reimbursed for conferences/trainings
- Security: Must obtain DOE "Q" clearance
- Subcontractor must have active eFOCI and approved Facility Level Clearance with DOE/NNSA
