Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren, MI three times per week, at minimum.

The Role:

The Thermal Controls Integration and SIL team is responsible for developing and delivering controls integrated thermal models (SIL) for performance balancing and virtual validation. In addition to Thermal SIL, the team works on pulling ahead thermal controls in the Advanced Vehicle Development space to aid energy optimization and range improvement. The team is very dynamic in problem solving with multiple ROI, Tool Methods Secret, Defensive Publications and Patent Applications. The Thermal Controls Technical Specialist will operate in a newly developed area of virtual thermal controls driving strategy for virtual execution.

What You'll do:

Help in the creation, development, and deployment of thermal co-simulation packages across EV, ICEV & Fuel Cell vehicle portfolio through:

  • Functional knowledge of thermal systems, propulsion systems, thermal plant modeling, refrigeration and air conditioning fundamentals, air flow management, HVAC component and system performance development & thermal cabin comfort elements
  • Understanding of modeling of components, sensors, actuators used in thermal, fan and shutter, HVAC, and Cabin Comfort controls
  • Ability to connect propulsion, thermal and HVAC systems, sensors, and actuators into a thermal plant model
  • Thermal Plant integration with VECUs at different levels
  • Working knowledge of thermal behavioral, MIL, SIL and vHIL controls integration
  • Understanding of thermal controls landscape across vehicle engineering
  • Ability to separate thermal controls into algorithm, calibration, and diagnostic and develop/deploy plant or co-simulation packages Knowledge of plant and controls modularization using SDM and SSP protocols
  • Provide leadership to define Thermal Controls and Co-Simulation Virtual Vision
  • Ability to communicate, motivate and influence others within the organization to accept new concepts, methods, practices, and approaches
  • Identify problems, update, or modify working methods that may be complex in the work area without the benefit of defined procedures
  • Ability to champion and lead change within group and with others related to group

Additional Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering with coursework in Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer and Fluid Mechanics
  • 7+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience and coursework in Lumped-Parameter Network Solvers, CFD methodology and application
  • Good theoretical background in Propulsion, Thermal, HVAC and Cabin plant modeling for controls algorithm development in GT-ISC and MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Experience with computer tools, 3D CAD files, CAE methods and Experimental Data

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills)

  • 3+ years of professional automotive experience
  • Masters or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering with focus on Thermal Sciences
  • Experience using commercial 1D solvers such as MATLAB-SIMULINK, SINDA-FLUINT, KULI, AMESIM, GT-POWER, TAI-THERM and CFD solvers such as FLUENT, STAR-CCM+, EXA-POWERFLOW, Mesh generators such as ANSA, TGRID, HYPERWORKS
  • Machine Learning and Neural Network
