Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Support Specialist

Summary

We are looking for a skilled and customer-focused Support Specialist to join our IT team. This role will be the primary technical contact for supporting and maintaining a VMware Horizon VDI environment across multiple support tiers (Level 1 3). Responsibilities include resolving user issues, managing and updating golden images, deploying new desktop pools, and partnering with application teams to ensure smooth virtual desktop operations. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with infrastructure, security, and application teams to optimize performance, reliability, and security within the VDI environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide Level 1 3 technical support for Horizon VDI issues such as access, performance, printing, and profile-related problems.
  • Build, maintain, and update golden images for various user groups, including application packaging, patching, and configuration.
  • Troubleshoot and validate application behavior within VDI sessions in partnership with application stakeholders.
  • Create and manage desktop pools in Horizon Administrator/Console (persistent and non-persistent).
  • Conduct root cause analysis of recurring problems and implement long-term fixes.
  • Maintain entitlement mappings and ensure proper access to VDI pools.
  • Monitor system health and generate reports on performance, usage, and capacity planning.
  • Apply patches, updates, and version upgrades to Horizon components and base images.
  • Work with infrastructure teams on escalations involving networking, storage, and host-level issues.
  • Document procedures, troubleshooting steps, and FAQs for internal knowledge sharing.
  • Coordinate UAT testing with business partners for new images and configurations.
  • Participate in change management and implementation planning for VDI initiatives.
  • Provide onboarding assistance and training for new VDI users.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Associate s or Bachelor s degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field.
  • Preferred: VMware Certified Professional Desktop and Mobility (VCP-DTM).

Required Experience:

  • 2+ years in IT support roles with at least 1 year in VDI environments.
  • Hands-on experience with VMware Horizon View (7.x/8.x), including Connection Server, Composer, and Agent.
  • Experience with Windows OS (Windows 10/11), Active Directory, and group policies.
  • Familiarity with Horizon Administrator/Console, vSphere Client, and PowerShell scripting.

Preferred Experience:

  • 3+ years supporting end-user computing or VDI in enterprise environments.
  • Strong experience creating and maintaining golden images (app installs, optimizations, Windows updates).
  • Knowledge of application packaging and troubleshooting within VDI.
  • Experience managing desktop pools (automated, linked clone, instant clone).
  • Knowledge of FSLogix, user profile redirection, and data management.
  • Integration experience with MFA, antivirus, and DLP solutions.
  • Familiarity with Jira or similar ITSM tools.
  • Collaboration with infrastructure teams on networking, DNS, storage, and security for VDI.
  • Knowledge of monitoring tools (Horizon Help Desk Tool, vRealize Operations, ControlUp).
  • Additional certifications such as ITIL Foundation, CompTIA A+, or VMware VCP-DTM are highly desirable.
