What you'll doAs an Associate Engineering Technician, you will support the engineering functions of the firm by taking field measurements, observing construction, and helping in the field and the office. You will also:
  • Understand and interpret drawings, plans and specifications.
  • Observe construction and document work in the field.
  • Keep daily records of quantities and activities.
  • Verify material specifications and project compliance.
  • Conduct field measurements for record drawings.
  • Use survey equipment, such as GPS, optical or laser level and hand tools.
  • Review drawings and specifications in the office.
  • Assist with copying, making plan sets, filing and maintaining the library.

What it takes

An associate degree in Construction Technology, Industrial Technology or Engineering Technology from a technical college or institution is required, but significant relevant experience in a similar industry or at a firm may offset this requirement. You should also:
  • Be a team player.
  • Maintain client confidentiality.
  • Be familiar with technical measurement, surveying, and reading and interpreting construction plans.
  • Work independently in the field with oversight.
  • Have authority to stop construction if contractors deviate from design, materials or methods.
  • Perform observation duties, including recording data, taking measurements, and verifying activities and quantities.
  • Speak and write well.
  • Communicate information to coworkers and contractors.
