HL7 Interface  Engineer - 100% Remote

Senior HL7 Integration Engineer with strong expertise in healthcare data exchange and modern API development to join our growing healthcare IT team.  This role will lead the design, implementation, and support of robust interoperability solutions connection EHRs, labs, imaging, billing, and external health partners.  The ideal candidate will have a deep experience with HL7 v2, FHIR, and Restful API integrations, and will serve as a technical expert across multiple initiatives.  This role includes but is not limited to oversight and management of our Corepoint and MIRTH engines. This role will report to the VP, Enterprise Solutions Delivery and will lead the HL7 team to plan, design, and build activities of the organization's interoperability environment. 

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain HL7 interfaces (v2, FHIR) to support clinical and operational data exchange.
  • Build and maintain scalable APIs to enable secure, standards-compliant integration between internal systems and third-party healthcare platforms
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including clinical informatics, data engineering, application support, and external vendors to gather requirements and define integration strategies.
  • Translate interface specifications and business requirements into technical interface logic and architecture.
  • Develop and maintain interface engine components (e.g., Mirth Connect, Rhapsody, Corepoint).
  • Lead troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and performance optimization of live interfaces and APIs.
  • Document data flows, interface logic, API specs, and integration configuration.
  • Ensure all integration solutions are compliant with HIPAA, HITRUST, and other relevant data security and privacy standards.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for HL7 and API integration in design reviews, technical discussions, and IT strategy sessions.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide guidance on HL7 mapping, interface development, and interoperability best practices.
  • Perform quality control, data validation, and work with business users for verification and signoffs.
  • Assists other teams in explaining interface mechanisms and details to the clients on pre-implementation conference calls.
  • Follows project management mechanism to track progress on regular basis throughout the implementation.
  • Liaison between clients and internal network team to setup network interface through necessary ports, IP addresses, VPN, etc. configurations.
  • Work with the Internal Database Administrator to keep systems data integrity in place.
  • Work with RIS, PACS, and MRS teams to provide a working physical model of  all HL7 Integrations.
  • Fulfills departmental requirements in terms of providing work coverage and administrative notification during periods of personnel illness, vacation, or education.
  • Producing weekly and monthly reports on HL7 Integrations and its status.
  • Performs software installations related to HL7 Engine and upgrades as necessary.
  • Interfaces with vendors in relation to "Bug" reporting through resolution.
  • Performs upgrades and migrations as necessary.
  • Create and maintain production and non-production environments.
  • Performs other related projects and duties as needed.
  • Must be able to express complex technical concepts effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to work well with people from many different disciplines with carrying degrees of technical experience.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • BS or BA in computer science or related field preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience in interface development with some supervisory duties.

Job Knowledge/Skills

  • Experience working with interface engines (Corepoint, Rhapsody, Epic, and MIRTH) and clinical workflows or healthcare workflows.
  • Knowledge of various healthcare applications (e.g. EMR, Lab, etc.).
  • Proficiency with working with HL7 and FHIR.
  • Detailed understanding of HL7 segments, fields and data types such as ADT, ORU and ORM.
  • Strong functional knowledge of and experience with an HL7 message validation tool like 7Edit or HL7 Inspector.
  • Knowledge of the various HL7 acknowledgement types and common industry practices when working withHL7 acknowledgement.
  • Proficient in SQL.
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as Java, C#, VB, etc. is a plus.
  • Proven experience with Healthcare-related data and HIPAA requirements.
  • Proven IT skills (including data evaluation/analysis using relevant computer applications); analytical skills and attention to detail.
