Job Description

Thermo Fisher Scientific's Customer Channels Group is seeking a Mainframe Systems Engineer to lead the evolution, maintenance, and optimization of core mainframe systems supporting our operations. This role will focus on modernizing legacy functionality, ensuring compliance, and delivering system reliability for business-critical processes. You'll collaborate with multi-functional IT and business teams to implement improvements, streamline workflows, and ensure our platforms meet the operational demands of today-and tomorrow.

Job Description:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Z/Series Systems Administrator to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and support of the Z/Series Operating system software and related subsystems. This role requires a deep understanding of mainframe environments and the ability to manage various aspects of the system to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Install and maintain the Z/Series Operating system software, including 160+ subsystems.
  • Install and maintain the IBM Ondemand Optical Retrieval system.
  • Maintain FTP activity to and from the mainframe.
  • Provide backup support for ACF2 security, DASD management, and Tape subsystem.
  • Provide support to all Application groups.
  • Perform all DASD management.
  • Maintain all backups.
  • Maintain internal panels for TSO usage.
  • Setup and manage the COBOL compilers for all program compilations on the Z/Series platform.
  • Perform performance and system tuning.
  • Responsible for mainframe DR testing, including restore and startup of the mainframe system.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent work experience required in lieu of degree
  • 10+ years of professional related work experience
  • Extensive knowledge of Z/Series Operating system software and subsystems.
  • Experience with IBM Ondemand Optical Retrieval system.
  • Proficiency in handling FTP activity to and from the mainframe.
  • Experience with ACF2 security, DASD management, and Tape subsystem.
  • Ability to maintain user documentation and support intranet web pages.
  • Strong understanding of DASD management and backup processes.
  • Experience with TSO usage and maintaining internal panels.
  • Proficiency in installing and maintaining COBOL compilers.
  • Strong performance tuning and system optimization skills.
  • Experience with mainframe DR testing and system restoration.
  • Experience support for MQ series and MQIPT
