Role Overview

Perficient is seeking a senior-level Mainframe Modernization Engineer to support a strategic application assessment initiative for a Financial Services client. This role focuses on analyzing legacy COBOL-based mainframe systems using AI-driven automated discovery tools, primarily IBM ADDI (Watsonx), to generate actionable insights for modernization and transformation planning.

The engineer will perform deep technical analysis to identify business logic, data flows, system dependencies, and modernization opportunities that will inform future migration and cloud transformation phases.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed technical analysis of legacy mainframe applications to identify business functionality, interdependencies, and modernization opportunities.

  • Use IBM ADDI (Watsonx) to conduct automated code scanning, data flow analysis, and business rule extraction.

  • Participate in technical discovery sessions with client teams to understand system context, challenges, and transformation goals.

  • Document findings and contribute to application assessment and modernization recommendation reports.

  • Collaborate with architects and client stakeholders to align assessment outputs with cloud migration, modernization, and AI integration strategies.

  • Support proof-of-concept activities and technical demonstrations as required.

  • Stay current with mainframe modernization tools, patterns, and AI-assisted analysis techniques.

  • Act as a trusted technical advisor during early engagement phases.

Required Technical Qualifications

  • 10+ years of hands-on mainframe experience, including:

    • COBOL, JCL, CICS, DB2, VSAM, REXX

  • Experience with batch schedulers (CA-7, Control-M, or similar).

  • Familiarity with RACF security and access control.

  • Strong experience with mainframe utilities (SORT, IDCAMS, IEBGENER, etc.).

  • Strong hands-on experience with IBM ADDI (Watsonx) for application discovery and analysis.

  • Proven experience conducting application assessments and extracting business logic from legacy systems.

  • Familiarity with AI/ML-driven approaches to legacy system analysis and modernization planning.

  • Strong communication and documentation skills.

  • Ability to work independently in a client-facing consulting environment.

  • Financial Services domain experience is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven experience with mainframe modernization initiatives, including application assessment, opportunity identification, and modernization roadmap development.

  • Experience supporting early-stage modernization strategy and execution planning.
