Senior Systems / Network Engineer (Contract to Hire)
Location: Open to Remote (US)
Travel Requirement:
Mandatory onsite training in Columbia, MD for 2 3 weeks
Ongoing travel may be required for training or key initiatives
Engagement Type: Contract to Hire
Duration: 6 months
Hours: Full-time, 40 hours/week
Position Overview
Fiducial is seeking a Senior Systems / Network Engineer to support the design, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of internal network and systems infrastructure. This role will function as a senior-level technical resource, providing Level 3 support, mentoring junior staff, and leading infrastructure projects.
The ideal candidate has strong VMware, network engineering, and system administration experience, with hands-on expertise across Palo Alto firewalls, Windows/Linux environments, Azure, and enterprise monitoring tools.
This is a replacement role and a key position on a growing IT team.

Key Responsibilities
Network Design & Management
- Design, implement, and maintain scalable, secure enterprise network architectures
Configure, manage, and support Palo Alto and Cisco firewalls, switches, routers, and wireless access points
Implement and maintain VPNs, IDS/IPS, and other network security controls
Ensure compliance with security standards and proactively mitigate risks
Systems Engineering & Administration
- Administer and maintain VMware server environments, including patching, updates, and performance optimization
Support VMware Horizon virtual desktop infrastructure (experience strongly preferred)
Maintain and patch Windows and Linux virtual machines
Manage Active Directory, Azure AD, and Microsoft 365 environments
Administer Azure infrastructure and cloud-based systems
Backup, DR & Monitoring
- Configure and manage Veeam backup and disaster recovery solutions
Schedule, verify, and monitor daily backups and offsite DR infrastructure
Use enterprise monitoring tools such as PRTG to monitor systems and network health
Troubleshooting & Performance
- Diagnose and resolve complex network and system issues
Perform root cause analysis and implement long-term solutions
Monitor performance trends and recommend infrastructure improvements
Projects & Collaboration
- Lead and contribute to infrastructure and network projects
Recommend and implement new technologies and continuous improvements
Provide Level 3 support and collaborate closely with internal IT teams
Maintain clear and accurate documentation of systems, networks, and procedures
Required Qualifications
Experience
- 5 10 years of experience in systems and network administration
Strong background in enterprise network environments
Technical Skills
- Palo Alto firewalls (required)
Cisco firewalls and switches
Enterprise network design, routing, and switching
Network security technologies (firewalls, VPNs, IDS/IPS)
VMware infrastructure administration
VMware Horizon (preferred)
Windows and Linux systems administration
Active Directory, Azure AD, Microsoft 365
Azure cloud infrastructure
Veeam backup and DR solutions
Monitoring tools such as PRTG
Education & Certifications
- Bachelor s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience
Network certifications (CCNP, JNCIP, etc.) are a plus
Soft Skills
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
Strong analytical and adaptability skills
Excellent written and verbal communication
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
