This is an unpaid fellowship through the Department of Defense (DoD) SkillBridge Program. The fellow selected for this role will not receive compensation or benefits from GDIT and will not be an employee, agent or contractor of GDIT but rather will remain an employee of the DoD and will receive compensation and benefits through the DoD.

Job Description:

Through the DoD SkillBridge Program, GDIT offers transitioning service members the opportunity to gain hands-on experience as a Network Engineer Fellow. In this fellowship, you'll support real-world missions, learn from seasoned engineers, and help modernize the network infrastructure that powers Air Force and Space Force operations worldwide. You'll work directly with technical teams and base counterparts while developing the skills needed for a successful transition into the civilian IT workforce.

A Network Engineer Fellow provides the technical expertise to modernize network design and implementation supporting multiple Air Force and Space Force bases globally. The Network Engineer Fellow will be the technical resource supporting the survey and implementation efforts and will work closely with the base's counterparts and facilitate the planning, execution, testing and sustainment of the wired functionality of the network.

HOW A NETWORK ENGINEER FELLOW WILL MAKE AN IMPACT:
  • Support the design and development of voice, video, RF, and data communications networks.
  • Collaborate with GDIT team leads and Air Force stakeholders on planning, engineering procedures, and project execution.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve local network issues, escalating as needed while gaining expert mentorship.
  • Participate in network software upgrades, configuration changes, and installation activities.
  • Update and maintain technical documentation, SOPs, and networking standards.
  • Support maintenance windows, including after-hours activities when required.
  • Assist with operational configuration changes including network devices, subnets, IP allocations, and LAN/WAN adjustments.
  • Contribute to the development of Network Services SOPs and knowledge articles.
  • Perform and support patching, upgrades, and configuration testing.
  • Maintain configurations across routers, switches, servers, and appliances.
  • Work with senior architects to support network design, development, and testing efforts.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO SUCCEED:
  • Education: Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science (additional years of experience in lieu of degree can be considered)
  • Required Experience: 2+ years of related experience
  • Familiarity with key engineering documents such as:
    • Site Survey Reports
    • PDR/CDR documentation
    • As-built diagrams
    • Rack elevations and circuit matrices
  • Solid understanding of wired networking, general IT fundamentals, and ideally wireless/RF networking
  • Ability to operate effectively in a virtual or distributed team
  • Ability to read and interpret technical procedures, diagrams, and regulations
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and organizational skills
  • Experience using MS Visio or similar diagramming/CAD tools

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Security Clearance: Secret (active or previously held; eligibility required)
  • Certification: Security+ CE (or DoD 8140/8570 equivalent)
  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship required
  • Location: Onsite

DoD SkillBridge Eligibility:
  • Has served at least 180 days on active duty
  • Can participate within the last 6 months of separation or retirement
  • Will receive an honorable discharge
  • Has taken any service TAP/TGPS
  • Has attended or participated in an ethics brief within the last 12 months

Received Unit Commander (first O-4/Field Grade commander in chain of command) written authorization and approval to participate in DoD SkillBridge Program prior to start of the fellowship.
