Job Title: Network Technician Consultant
Location: Columbia, SC (Hybrid: 2 days remote, 3 days onsite)
Duration: 12 Months
Public Sector/Government Experience: Required
Project Overview:
The division is responsible for developing, implementing, maintaining, and supporting multiple mission-critical IT applications and network systems for a state government department. This role will also assist in enhancing facility and network documentation efforts and contribute to a dashboard-driven view of agency assets. The Network Technician will report to the Senior Network Architect.
Key Responsibilities:
Network Installation & Support:
Install, configure, and implement LAN and wireless infrastructure, including switches, cabling, and other network components.
Troubleshoot and resolve moderately complex network issues and implement root cause prevention measures.
Monitor and optimize network performance and document incident resolution paths.
Maintain and update SOPs, diagrams, and technical documentation.
Assist in hardware/network design, configuration, and infrastructure planning.
Maintain updated network equipment inventory and assist in lifecycle planning.
Evaluate new networking technologies and provide recommendations for integration.
Facilities & Dashboard Support:
Collaborate with Facilities and Finance teams to update master inventory of department locations, including property ownership, address, square footage, network bandwidth, access control, parking, and staffing assignments.
Maintain accurate floor plans, workstation placements, and equipment layouts.
Produce and maintain a centralized dashboard displaying facility data, floorplans, personnel count, and system information.
Ensure facility data is documented and reportable.
Additional Project-Based Tasks:
Conduct physical audits and cleanup of network closets, labeling and organizing to industry standards.
Update and maintain CAD/PDF "as-built" network diagrams for all department office locations.
Perform on-site cellular signal strength assessments to support SD-WAN carrier selection.
Deliverables:
Network closet audit reports with before/after photos and patch documentation.
Up-to-date floorplans with workstations and network layouts for all office locations.
Monthly progress reports summarizing activities and hours worked.
SOPs and documentation for network patching and closet standards.
Dashboard implementation with facility data.
Required Skills:
Knowledge of data network services, communications, and office automation systems.
Ability to assist with network design, configuration, and troubleshooting.
Knowledge of computer system analysis, testing, debugging, and maintenance techniques.
Ability to present technical and non-technical reports clearly.
Education:
Bachelor s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field.
Relevant experience may be substituted for the degree on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Skills:
Advanced network configuration and protocol knowledge.
Skilled in cable management, patch panels, fiber optics, and telecom/network closet troubleshooting.
Ability to produce comprehensive documentation of configurations, procedures, and incident logs.
Familiarity with wireless infrastructure, cloud networking (SD-WAN, Azure), and VoIP technologies.
