Seeking a Senior Backend Engineer - Federal

Position Overview:

Apex is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Backend Engineer or Principal Software Engineer to join a critical federal government program. As part of a core team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining highly scalable and performant backend microservices and cloud-native applications.

The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of backend architecture and a proven track record of delivering robust, elegant solutions, even in environments with evolving requirements and limited documentation. This is an exceptional opportunity for a strong problem-solver who can demonstrate both strong technical proficiency and independent work capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, and maintain highly scalable and performant microservice applications, including complex case management systems with secure user authentication.
• Lead the development of backend services using Python, leveraging frameworks such as FastAPI.
• Manage and optimize PostgreSQL databases using SQLAlchemy and Alembic.
• Implement and maintain containerized applications using Docker and orchestrate deployments with Kubernetes.
• Architect and manage cloud infrastructure on AWS, utilizing services like ECS, ECR, Fargate, SQS, and Secrets Manager.
• Work effectively with ambiguous requirements, demonstrating the ability to independently define solutions and drive projects forward.
• Collaborate with technical and business stakeholders to troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues.
• Contribute to architectural discussions and guide the technical direction of backend systems.

Required Qualifications:

• Experience: 10+ years of professional experience in building and deploying microservice applications, particularly with case management systems and user authentication.
• Backend Expertise: Expert-level proficiency in Python, including extensive experience with modern frameworks like FastAPI and database tools like SQLAlchemy and Alembic.
• Database Skills: Strong experience in PostgreSQL database design, optimization, and administration.
• Cloud & Containerization: Proficiency in containerization technologies (Docker) and orchestration platforms (Kubernetes). Hands-on experience with AWS services, including ECS, ECR, Fargate, SQS, and Secrets Manager.
• Problem-Solving: Demonstrated ability to work effectively with vague requirements and limited documentation, translating business needs into technical solutions.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency in Linux environments and excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Any relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certifications) are a plus.
