Job Title: Database Administrator (DBA)
Location: Lansing, Michigan - Hybrid
Duration: 12 months (with possible extension)
Interview Process: Microsoft Teams with camera on (2nd Round)
Job Overview
The ideal candidate will be responsible for the full lifecycle of our database systems, including design, architecture, administration, performance tuning, and security. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
SQL & PL/SQL Development
- Provide advanced SQL and PL/SQL coding expertise, including writing and optimizing complex functions, procedures, and packages.
- Review, analyze, and test code written by other team members to ensure performance, scalability, and adherence to best practices.
- Support application developers with SQL design and data access strategies.
Database Architecture & Design
- Collaborate with the IT Solutions Architect to design robust, scalable database solutions for enterprise applications and system interfaces.
- Lead the development and enforcement of database policies, procedures, and standards.
- Plan and design database hosting architecture in alignment with State standards and strategic business requirements.
- Provide technical leadership in the design and management of physical database structures.
Database Administration & Maintenance
- Install, configure, and maintain SQL Server instances across development, test, and production environments.
- Perform regular backups, restores, and recovery testing to ensure data integrity and availability.
- Monitor and maintain database performance, availability, and security using tools like SSMS, SQL Server Agent, and third-party solutions (e.g., SolarWinds, Redgate, Idera).
- Manage indexes, partitions, statistics, and schema parameters for optimal performance.
- Apply patches, updates, and version upgrades as required.
Monitoring, Troubleshooting & Support
- Proactively identify, diagnose, and resolve performance bottlenecks and system alerts.
- Analyze logs, trace data, and performance metrics to troubleshoot issues.
- Collaborate with IT and DevOps teams to ensure server stability and uptime.
- Oversee the creation of physical database components and coordinate initial server setup.
Data Integrity, Security & Governance
- Implement and manage user roles, permissions, and access controls.
- Ensure compliance with data security policies, standards, and industry best practices.
- Participate in disaster recovery planning and implement high-availability strategies.
- Develop and enforce database models and documentation standards.
- Support data warehouse teams with data transfer and transformation processes.
Top Skills & Qualifications
Required/Must Have:
- 12+ years of overall experience in the field, with a minimum of:
- 10 Years of advanced SQL and T-SQL/PL/SQL.
- 6 Years of experience with PowerShell scripting.
- 6 Years of experience with Azure DevOps.
- 6 Years of experience working in Scrum/Agile methodologies.
- Strong proficiency in query optimization and performance tuning.
- Hands-on experience with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and SQL Server Agent.
- Solid understanding of database security, backup/recovery strategies, and high availability configurations.
- Experience with database monitoring tools such as SolarWinds, Redgate, or Idera.
- Proven ability to enforce development standards across teams.
- Excellent communication and soft skills.
Preferred/Plus:
- Familiarity with ETL processes and Azure SQL
