Job Description
ECS is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to work in our Silver Spring, MD office.
Candidate shall have design integration experience with shipboard mechanical systems and become a valuable member of an engineering team developing procurement specifications for research ships. Duties to include providing technical evaluation of vendor proposed system designs, providing assessments on the design maturity, and determination of expected system performance to meet operational requirements. Periodically the candidate will be required to assess piping system design using PipeFlow and write technical papers on the technical risk of systems being able to meet ABS/USCG/IMO design standards.
Past performance would have given the candidate experience in designing or using most/all the onboard piping systems (hydraulics, ships auxiliaries, HVAC, fuel distribution, water production, etc). Additional duties may include drawing review/modification; shipboard material inspections; and development of ship alteration packages.
Some travel will be required, principally to vendors, shipyard locations, and/or various NOAA locations. Overseas travel is a possibility.
Required to be in office in Silver Spring, MD a minimum of 3 days a week.
Salary Range: $70,000 - $120,000

Required Skills
- BS degree in Mechanical/Marine or other engineering disciplines.
- Six (6) to ten (10) years' experience in the shipbuilding industry in the mechanical engineering discipline.
- Ability to perform system design calculations and verification.
- Experience supporting ship concept/preliminary design development and performing feasibility studies.
- Ability to review/modify drawings for technical completeness.
- Experience with ShipConstructor, Pipe Flow, Rhino, Navisworks, SolidWorks and other ship design software.
- Understanding of ABS, USCG and other regulatory agencies rules as they pertain to shipboard piping and mechanical systems.
Desired Skills
- PE in Naval Architecture/Marine or other engineering disciplines.
- Shipboard operating experience with scientific/research ships.
- Ability to lead the development of design/technical specification.
- Experience with ship construction/repair oversight.
- Ability to perform and evaluate piping system design and installation.
- Experience with cost estimating.
- Experience with ship systems testing and acceptance.
