Guidance, Navigation & Control Engineer

Company:
The Boeing Company

Boeing Defense Space & Security is seeking an Associate Guidance, Navigation and Control (GN&C) Engineer to join our Experimental Systems Group (ESG) located in Seal Beach, CA. ESG supports a variety of government customers spanning technology domains, and is an extremely fast-paced, responsive development environment specializing in delivering new capabilities to customers rapidly and affordably. The ESG portfolio consists of a range of platforms and technologies including the X-37B, the world's first fully autonomous reusable spaceplane.

As a member of our GN&C team, you will join a highly experienced and mission-focused team of engineers specializing in hypersonic re-entry, aircraft and satellite GN&C. We work closely with Business Development teams and our customers. We rapidly prototype new concepts then deploy and iterate our designs and systems. As an engineer working in this area you will typically be engaged across multiple projects and involved in simulation development, system analysis, GN&C requirements and software development, integration, operational concept development, and flight test in both atmospheric and space environments. Our development timelines are aggressive and you will be asked to develop solutions to previously unsolved problems.

An ideal candidate has a strong technical background in astrodynamics, autonomy, space environment and spacecraft operational knowledge, solid fundamentals in linear algebra, experience with simulation and mathematical modeling, is comfortable with MATLAB and Simulink, and has experience with C/C++ or is generally proficient in programming languages. You will need to be able to work effectively in broad, minimally defined design spaces.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Support technology integration for and development of first-of-kind vehicles and missions
  • Develop and maintain 6-DOF spacecraft dynamics sim and associated analysis tools
  • Implement, test, and verify the performance of spacecraft GN&C flight software
  • Apply astrodynamics knowledge to support the design of missions using novel and experimental orbits
  • Support the development of powered and unpowered guidance laws and tools
  • Support troubleshooting of routine operational anomalies, functional tests and service incidents
  • Create concepts of operations, tools, and flight software for autonomous spacecraft operations
  • Support the development of missions in new business areas
  • Be a self-starter that independently identifies and diagnoses problems and inefficiencies and creates fixes and tools that addresses them
