Applied Data Scientist

The AI for Good Lab is hiring a n Applied Data Scientist to join our team in Redmond, WA. Our Lab leverages the power of data, our cloud technology , world -class talent to catalyze and inspire others to partner in tackling some of the world's most pressing challenges. Over the past few years, the Lab has become a data and AI driven solution creator, storyteller and trusted advisor working closely with leaders across Microsoft, academia, NGOs, and all levels of government to deliver impact, data-driven solutions. Our mission is to be one of the top applied research and data visualization labs driving positive change and serve as a blueprint for others. In this role, you will collaborate with researchers, data engineers, and fellow data scientists across Microsoft, and external partners to apply state of the art AI and data science approaches to real world challenges. You'll use analytical thinking and experimentation to uncover insights, evaluate performance, and guide strategy across mission driven projects. A key part of your work will involve leadi ng prototyping and storytelling efforts, translating complex data into clear, compelling narratives that inform decision makers and inspire action. You'll stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends while contributing to a positive, inclusive team culture through documentation, ethical research practices, and knowledge sharing.

Responsibilities:

• Identify and curate diverse data sources for use in artificial intelligence and statistical modeling.
• Rapidly prototypes and iterates on data driven solutions, prepares and analyzes data, builds and evaluates machine learning models, and applies statistical methods and experimentation to uncover insights, validate approaches, and support the implementation of models and pipelines to deliver measurable positive outcomes .
• Collaborate closely with AI research scientists, data analysts, data engineers, business and project stakeholders and incorporate their expertise into your analytical solutions.
• Partner with NGOs, academic institutions, and government agencies to help advance their efforts in addressing food security, environmental concerns, disaster resiliency, and health.
• Represents the Lab's capabilities and technical findings to internal and external leadership audiences through compelling written, visual, and oral communication, translating complex data into clear narratives that inform and inspire positive change.

Qualifications:

Required/minimum qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
  • OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
  • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field OR equivalent experience.
• 1+ year(s) of experience in working with Generative AI models and ML stacks

Additional or preferred qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
  • OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
  • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
  • OR equivalent experience.
• 1+ year(s) experience creating publications (e.g., patents, peer-reviewed academic papers).
• Experience working within an academic and/or NGO organization OR an history of volunteering.
• Proficient foundation in statistics, probability, and applied machine learning techniques
• 1+ year(s) experience in analyzing data, deriving actionable insights to drive impactful engineering solutions.

Applied Sciences IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.
