Mechanical Design Engineer Location: In Office / Austin, Texas Full-Time
Position Summary: This is a unique and important opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer to contribute to the design, development and support of the voting devices produced by client. This engineer will use their skills in SolidWorks 3D along with sound mechanical engineering practices to overcome the challenges presented by industrial design, packaging and functionality while still achieving cost, reliability, and manufacturability requirements. This role will directly affect the experience that the voting public has when interacting with these infrastructure critical devices as their work impacts the entire device portfolio.
Responsibilities: Convert industrial design and market concepts into mechanical designs using SolidWorks 3D, providing end-to-end, concept through production, system-level mechanical designs of security critical electromechanical devices. Collaborate with a broad, cross-functional team to achieve schedule, cost, reliability, and functional requirements. Identify, propose, and drive alternative solutions to optimize product design and manufacturing technological choices to minimize cost and investment. Plans work in detail at an individual level, creating a robust and accountable plan. Work with vendors to develop rapid prototyping-based sample plastic parts, develop soft-tooled and hard-tooled product plastic parts. Identify critical dimensions and documents as special characteristics and requirements The ability to travel periodically to various fabricator and assembly locations as necessary to support selection assessments, tooling progress, prototyping, production quality, election support, etc.
Experience: Minimum of 4 years experience (3 years with an MSME) in mechanical and electromechanical engineering fields. Minimum of 2 years experience with SolidWorks 3D designing complete assemblies. Proficient in designing injection molded plastics and sheet metal parts used in electromechanical assemblies. Hands-on experience with designing, making, and building mock-ups and prototypes. Experience in the use of rapid prototyping technologies such as Stereolithography (SLA), HP Multi-Jet Fusion (MJF), and Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) preferred. Experience taking plastics parts from concept to rapid prototyping to soft-tooling production and then to hard-tooled production. Knowledge of manufacturing technologies and processes, including FMEA, DFM, reliability, concepts of life predictions, mean time between failure calculations, and design for experiments. Experience creating complete release packages for designs (drawings, critical dimensioning and design packages, bill of materials, etc.) Ability to work with cross functional teams focused on value engineering and design efforts. Ability to work independently as well as productively in a team environment. Must be detail oriented, meet deadlines and highly motivated. Strong interpersonal communication (both written and verbal), conflict management skills and presentation skills. Geometric dimensioning and tolerance (GD&T) experience preferred.
Education: Bachelor s degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited university.
